وَمِنهُنَّand among them إِذwhen راعىhe watched جَناباًa courtyard وَقَدand already دَناhe drew near
إِلىto بابِthe door of مِغلاقِone who blocks الشَباweapon-points غَيرِnot مُغلَقِbarred
And among them: when he watched a courtyard, having drawn near
to the unbarred door of one who blocks weapon-points.
فَلَمّاthen when رَأىhe saw أَنthat قَدalready كَرَرتُI turned back وَراءَهُbehind him
تَكَشَّرَhe bared his teeth وَالحَوباءُand the soul عِندَat المُخَنَّقِthe throat
Then, when he saw that I had turned back behind him,
he bared his teeth, his soul at his throat,
تَكَشَّرَthe grimace of مَكروبٍa distressed man يُتَلُّbeing thrown down وَكَمand how many رَأىhe had seen
عَلىat بابِthe door of سَلمٍSalm مِنof أَكُفٍّhands وَأَسوُقِand legs
the grimace of a distressed man thrown down—and how many he had seen
at Salm’s door—hands and legs!
فَلَوso if أَنَّنيthat I داوَيتُI treated قَوماًa people شَفَيتُهُمI cured them
وَلَكِنَّنيbut I لاقَيتُencountered مِثلَthe like of الجَلَوبَقِal-Jalawbaq
Had I treated a people, I would have cured them,
but I encountered the like of al-Jalawbaq.
وَكُنتُand I was أَرىthinking أَنَّthat الجَلَوبَقَal-Jalawbaq قَدalready ثَوىhad been laid to rest
فَيَنفِقُthen he slips out ليbefore me مِنfrom بَينَbetween رُكنَيthe two corners of مُخَفَّقِa fluttering cloth
And I had thought that al-Jalawbaq had been laid to rest,
yet he slips out before me from between the two corners of a fluttering cloth.
