Ah, how can a Bahili survive,

    fallen between al-Farazdaq and Hell?

Are you not a deaf, mute Bahili,

the gutter at the bottom of ignoble ancestry?

Are you not, when traced to a Bahili,

surely the basest of all who kicked within the fetal sac?

And can the son of Nakhbah, when he howls, be saved

by reaching for the Weapon-Bearer among the stars?

Did we not leave Hawazin—where there blew

our wind upon them—like shattered dry stalks,

that evening when Qutaybah had no place among Nizar,

    in its numbers, nor in noble lineage;

that evening when death cut away from him

the blood of the grafted-on from that of true stock?

So whoever may abandon anything at all,

I, for my part, will not forsake the sons of Tamim.

I am the protector, bound to answer for every deed

they have committed, recent and old alike.

For I have pledged to bear, in defiance of death,

the burdens of every man responsible for a grave offense.

And noble Ma'add knows full well that we

possess consummate ancestral honor and wisdom,

and that our spears are defiant and grow fierce

over all that lies between Aliyah and Rum.

I swore by the gaunt-bodied, disheveled ones,

    standing between Zamzam and al-Hatim:

Hawazin has indeed ridden, because of my satire,

upon a humpbacked mount with dried-out joints.
