دَعَوتُI summoned بِناريwith my fire موهِناًlate at night فَأَتانيso he came to me
A dusky, loping wolf, no companion of mine,
I summoned with my fire late at night, and he came.
فَلَمّاand when دَناhe drew near قُلتُI said اِدنُcome closer دونَكَtake your share إِنَّنيindeed I

When he drew near, I said, 'Come closer; take your share: I
And you shall surely share my provisions.'
فَبِتُّso I spent the night أقدcutting up الزادَthe provisions بَينيbetween me وَبَينَهُand between him

I spent the night cutting up the food between us,
By firelight at one moment, and smoke at another.
فَقُلتُso I said لَهُto him لَمّاwhen تَكَشَّرَhe bared his teeth ضاحِكاًgrinning

I said to him as he bared his teeth in a grin,
With my sword's hilt within reach of my hand:
تَعَشَّeat supper فَإِنfor if واثَقتَنيyou pledge to me لاnot تَخونَنيto betray me
نَكُنwe shall be مِثلَlike مَنthose who ياO ذِئبُwolf يَصطَحِبانِkeep company together
'Eat supper; if you pledge not to betray me,
We shall be like two companions, O wolf.
وَأَنتَand you اِمرُؤٌa fellow ياO ذِئبُwolf وَالغَدرُand treachery كُنتُماyou two were

You are such a fellow, O wolf: you and treachery were
Two little brothers, both suckled on the same milk.

Had you roused anyone but us, seeking hospitality,
He would have met you with an arrow or a spear's sharp point.

Everywhere in the wake of those departing?
فَأَصبَحتُso I found myself لاnot أَدريknowing أَأَتبَعُwhether I should follow ظاعِناًa departing traveler

So I found myself unsure whether to follow one departing,
Or whether longing called me toward the one who stayed.

Each of the two has carried away a portion
Of my heart, and my two eyes race with tears.

Their lips would then leave their back teeth bare.

You exposed my honor in life and disgraced it,
And lit a fire against me everywhere.

Two [divorces] would surely have burst forth, jostling together.

But kinship keeps driving me
Toward you, as though I were a forfeited pledge.

Like night and sea when they meet.

When the howler barks, with my hand and tongue.

Against me—not even with the greatest numbers.

While humans and jinn fear us if we grow angry.

The greatness of our forbearance and our serving bowls.

When the two girths shook, were a wild cow of Iran.

Of noble birth, and each radiant-browed, chaste woman?
