It belonged to Uthman; he held its caliphate without injustice.
Then the people violated the greatest sanctities in his person:

Inviolable blood and solemnly binding oaths,
In days when the people's lice were lodged among the locks.

You separated the Christians in their churches
From the worshippers before dawn and at nightfall.

Turned different ways as they bowed to God and the idol.

By the people of the cross, mingle with reciters? You did not sleep.

When they judged for them concerning the crops and the sheep—

On their offspring and the shearing of wool with shears.

Away from a mosque where pure words are recited.

Its billows clashed in a place of gaping breaches.

To defend its wall, while it is like a two-humped camel in rut.

Though they stand on a height like Khiyam's mighty mountain.

And of hunger with fat on a bitter, freezing day.
