Who is left for my soul, now that nectar is nectar no more?

And for my heart, now that no companion is truly a companion?

O my angel—alas! The ravens of separation

raise high their croaking and cawing.

O bride of imagination, summer has passed,

leaving in souls what they cannot bear:

sorrow crying aloud, and insistent longing,

wounds that have not healed, and raging fires.

Ah, yearning has worn my soul away, and passion

has exhausted my heart; indeed, it deserves to.

O heart’s desire, the two sandy shores now lie empty—

no lover there, and no beloved.

Autumn winds rage across the horizon,

one after another, with their thunder and lightning,

after it once had been, O sister of my soul,

the breast’s fullness when nectar was passed around.

No more the dear companions, my girl—those two bands,

one drinking, the other making merry.

Nor does the lute, in the stillness of darkest night, sing,

making cheers and applause rise high.

Nor are the wine cups brimming,

with a gleam circling them in the darkness of night.

Ah, how immense the calamity! Come,

share my sorrow, for my grief is deep.

O my girl, the brides of revelation and inspiration

    have vanished—when will dawn break?

The lute is broken; the drinking companions and night revelers

have gone, and the ewer is shattered.

My cup is dry; the morning draught is a morning draught no more,

with my companions gone, nor is the evening draught still evening drink.

So come here, to the shores,

and exchange words of love with the shore, for it too yearns.

Let us spill our tears upon its thirsty sands,

and lament love—why should we not pour them out?

    It has flared—alas!—between my ribs,

ever since you vanished, O my heart’s desire: a fire.

    يلهبُ القلب حرّهُ وشهيق

    A sigh from its blaze tears the soul apart;

its heat and a gasping sob inflame the heart.

O nourishment of the heart, O joy of the soul—

come; indeed, my covenant is firm.

May my father ransom your lovely mouth; for the heart has

a companion before it, and a flutter.

And your countenance, my girl—within it

    are daisies, narcissi, and anemones:

a radiant smile and a bright, open face,

    noble qualities and a gentle nature;

a luminous brow and a smooth cheek,

intoxicated eyes and a graceful figure.

My girl, I am drunk without wine—

when, O life of my soul, shall I come to my senses?

My girl, I am a slave in your keeping,

and it is unjust for a slave to be humiliated.

My girl, I have lost my way, and my heart is lost

to me—where, where is the road?

My girl, I am drowning—is there any

rescuer? How often, how often the drowning man cries out!

My girl, I have been taken captive—and how many a

free man has sprung up to torment me—alas!

My girl, I am driven onward—mercy, mercy!—

when one driven onward comes to you.

My girl, have mercy on me; I am wretched.

Make me happy; indeed, I deserve it.

My girl, you have burdened me beyond what I can

bear. Have mercy; indeed, I cannot endure it.

I have no beloved to whom I may complain, that he might pity me

for my grievance; nor any faithful friend,

nor a tenderhearted father, nor a mother

who might show tenderness, nor a compassionate brother.

    لك ما ذقته وما سأذوق

    Love has made me drink a deadly poison;

for you, this is what I have tasted and shall taste.

O bride of inspiration, O wellspring of revelation—

come; indeed, my covenant is firm.

I soared, and then my wing was clipped.

O my angel, my fate is cruel and treacherous.

Re-feather it, that I may soar in the sky

    of hopes—how flight delighted me!
