The garden is no garden, nor is the tawny wine wine,

Nor are the drinking companions blessed and beloved.

The meeting place has grown distant: no dream-vision, no hope.

Where are the close friends? May the close friends perish!

Hawwa! Alas for a malady that has taken root in

My heart; the cure grew elusive, and the malady grew severe.

And for searing pangs of longing that tore my liver apart,

Until even implacable enemies took pity on me.

Who is there for the dejected, whose gallbladder has been split?

Who is there for the sorrowful, now that adversity has touched him?

So food will not go down when he eats it,

Nor does water slake his thirst—alas for him!

    نصيبه نوبٌ منها وأرزاء

    He lives in this world without hope;

His lot in it is calamities and grievous losses.

O torch of the soul, how often the reproachful women told me:

“You are not [yourself], nor is Hawwa Hawwa.”

    وجُرتِ والأذنِ عن شكوايَ صمّاء

    You deserted me, and the soul remains bewildered;

And you were unjust, and your ear was deaf to my complaint.

And in the hell of love's anguish is a tormented soul,

And my eye has known no slumber since you departed.

Ask the east wind: I entrusted it with a message,

And often tidings from it have stirred me.

Hawwa, remembrance of that time has tormented me,

And I, O life of the soul, am not one to forget.

This is the cup in my palm; I shall drink it,

For it is the cure, and the physicians have grown weary.

For I am not the first yearning lover to drain it,

Nor the first lovesick man a beauty has consigned to the grave.

And here is my soul: I offer it as a sacrifice,

O altar of love, may the miserly perish!
