وإذا ما هزّتِ الذكرى الحماما

فغدا في الدوح يشدو وينوح

And when remembrance stirs the doves,

And when memory shakes the doves,

Then in the leafy trees they sing and lament.

So they sing and lament in the valleys,

اذكريني كلّما زفَّ الشمول

ذاتُ دلٍّ ودَلالٍ أو غُلام

ذاتُ دلٍّ ودَلالٍ أو غُلام

Remember me whenever the wine is ushered in

Remember me whenever desire oozes,

By a coy, coquettish woman or a boy.

With a flirt or a lad or a slave,

وإذا ما استَرجَع الشربُ العقول

وإذا ما استَرجَع الشربُ العقول

فغَفوا تكلاهم عين السلام

فغَفوا تكلاهم عين السلام

And when the drinkers regain their senses,

And when drinking dims the minds,

Then they sleep, watched over by the eye of peace.

So they nap while the eye of peace blinks.

وارتمى سكرانَ ما بين يديك

Remember me whenever March arrives

صارخاً في نفسكِ الولهى الشعور

And when longing stirs you, and there wells up

And when longing agitates you and surges,

Feeling, crying out within your lovesick soul.

Shouting in your soul - enthralled passions.

ثملاً أفراخهُ عند الشروق

Remember me whenever the nightingale croons

Remember me whenever the partridges coo,

Drunkenly to its fledglings at sunrise.

Inebriated - their chicks at dawn,

وإذا ما هزمَ الليلُ النهار

وإذا ما هزمَ الليلُ النهار

واستثارَ الوُرقَ تنحابُ المشوق

واستثارَ الوُرقَ تنحابُ المشوق

And when night defeats the day,

And the yearning lover's sobs rouse the gray doves.

And the boughs rustle - distorted visions.

وإذا ما شاعرُ الحيِّ تألَّم

فبكى في الشجنِ واستبكى النفوس

And when the one alive with joy is tormented,

Then weeps in sorrow and moves souls to tears.

Then all the young women and men meet,

So each girl and lad come together,

And behold, the world is peace and smiles.

O night and dreadful silence,

Renew the anguish in the pierced heart.

Renewing agony in my diseased heart,

أينَ قيثاري وكوبي والحبيب

وشموعي ونديمي واحنيني

Where are my lyre, my cup, and the beloved,

Where is my guitar, my cup and beloved,

And my candles and my drinking companion? Alas for my yearning!

يا ملاهي الصحب في تلك الرمالِ

أنا مذ أقفرتِ في عيشٍ مرير

O my companions' haunts of pleasure in those sands,

O pastimes of friends on those sands,

فغدا من همّهِ في سَقَرِ

Wretched like me, bitten by wolves,

Wretched as I, torn by wolves,

Who thus, through his anguish, found himself in Saqar?

So he became, from anxiety, in Hell.

يا رفاقي أكؤس الصبا المريره

يا رفاقي أكؤس الصبا المريره

أجَّجَت نار الأسى في أضلُعي

أجَّجَت نار الأسى في أضلُعي

O my companions, the bitter cups of youth

O friends, the bitter cups of youth

Have kindled the fire of grief within my ribs.

Lit the fire of sorrow in my ribs,

فإذا ما انطَلَقت روحي الأسيره

فإذا ما انطَلَقت روحي الأسيره

فادفنوا كوبي وقيثاري معي

فادفنوا كوبي وقيثاري معي

And when my captive soul breaks free,

So when my imprisoned soul is unleashed,

Then bury my cup and my lyre with me.

Bury with me my cup and guitar.

فاشهقي يا روح وازفِر يا سعير

فاشهقي يا روح وازفِر يا سعير

واضطَرِب يا عقلُ واشرُد يا أمَل

واضطَرِب يا عقلُ واشرُد يا أمَل

So gasp, O soul, and exhale, O blazing fire!

So pant, O soul, and roar, O hell,

And tremble, O mind, and stray, O hope!

Be disturbed, O mind, and wander, O hope,

وأجر يا دمعُ وأقبل يا نذير

وأجر يا دمعُ وأقبل يا نذير

وأبكِ يا قلبُ وأسرِع يا أجَل

وأبكِ يا قلبُ وأسرِع يا أجَل

And flow, O tears, and come, O harbinger!

And flow, O tear, and come, O warner,

And weep, O heart, and hasten, O death!

واصرخي يا ريحُ وانحَب وتَر

واعبسي يا كأسُ واغرُب يا قمَر

And shriek, O wind, and sob, O string!

And scream, O wind, curl up and crumble,

And frown, O cup, and set, O moon!

وتعالى ودّعي قبلَ السفَر

بُلبُلاً قصّ جناحَيهِ القدَر

And come, bid farewell before the journey
