Oh, if only I were a dove upon the boughs,

to lament at day's end and in the hours before dawn.

Perhaps I might find in the garden someone who confides

his secret to me, and I would tell him my secrets.

Or if I were a breeze among the breezes,

to bring the birds glad tidings in March,

and, after roaming the earth, roam the horizons of heaven,

to see where my beloved lies hidden.

Oh, if only I were a butterfly among the roses,

quenching its thirst from the cups of blossoms,

until, having quenched its burning thirst, it thirsted

for death and plunged into the heart of the fire.

Or if I were, O dawn, a lark, fluttering

with my wings through the bare expanse,

    to repeat the melodies, drunk

on beauty's wine before the lights gleam.

Oh, if only I were a hill among the hills,

    green, shining above the valleys,

to be a pulpit for every singing bird,

and my slope a roaming ground for gazelles.

Or if I were a stream amid the gardens,

flowing among roses and sweet basil,

so birds might flutter above its waters,

    drunk, trilling the sweetest melodies.

Oh, if only I were a bird, to swim through the open sky

    and return rejoicing with the birds;

or a bulbul, to charm the ears with

    gentle song upon the treetops.

Or if I became a plectrum for the oud,

so hands might sweep me across the strings,

to confide to them love's lament—perhaps they

would pity the plight of the bewildered lover.

Oh, if only I were—oh, if only I were—a turtledove,

to moan at morning and evening,

perhaps stirring in every fair woman's heart

compassion for the wretched among poets.

Or if I were a grove amid the gardens,

to perfume the air with fragrances,

or a rose whose beauty spring had fashioned,

so mornings might sprinkle me with dewdrops.

For how often fancy has appeared to me as reality,

and the onlooker takes me for one laid low by wine.

Then I come to, bewildered, and cry, 'Who am I?'

Then a madman answered from the depths of the house.

O Love, in your hands my soul laments.

Have you not unveiled the mysteries of secrets?

    رحماك فهي قصيرة الأعمار

    O Love, the dreams of passion are beautiful;

have mercy, for their lives are brief.
