O bird of dawn, who enticed us with wine

but you, as you warble drunkenly to the garden?

Rise and drink at dawn, for the roses' cups are brimming

with dawn's wine; dawn has indeed appeared.

    وحيه واسكب الأشواق ألحانا

    Dance, beat your wings, fly, cry out, and sing of it;

greet it, and pour out your longings as melodies.

How many a melody you have fashioned, prompted by its splendor

and inspired by its rising—sing it aloud now!

Ask the garden about the dreams of its slumber,

and seek news from the myrtle, the blossoms, and the moringa trees.

Revive the solace dead within our souls, for

despair has ruined them; then hear our lament.

O neighbors of the garden, who among you will tell us—

for time has drawn you close to it and kept us far away—

how our loved ones fare? May rain bless their dwelling!

We remain true to our pledge to them, despite all that has happened.

Ask your Layla, by your Lord, for how often

she has spent the night sharing sorrows with our Layla beneath night's wing!

How often she disclosed to her what her breast held,

and she would shed tears in compassion and tenderness.

O neighbors of the garden, while dreams wander astray,

how happy you were there, and how wretched we!

Our past is in God's keeping, and our present

is misery and despair—ah, damnation to whoever proved treacherous!

Layla, come, and restore some of what was taken

from us by the nights of separation, out of compassion and kindness.

Layla, come, for time's vicissitudes have declared

war, and shattered us unjustly and tyrannically.

Layla, come, so we may lament what we endure

in the quarter, since the free became slaves.

    وكفكفي دمعنا فالوضع أبكانا

    Layla, come, for doubt has crept into us;

and wipe away our tears, for our plight has made us weep.

    لعل بالراح يا ليلاي سلوانا

    Layla, come, pass round the wine, mixed with water;

perhaps in wine, my Layla, there is solace.

We are calling you, Layla—no wonder,

for you, by God, are our world and our hereafter.
