Kindle it and leave it in my innards,

burning the heart and ravaging the ribs.

Kindle it—a fire of unbridled longing,

a blazing fire of deprivation, O my heart's desire.

    Welcome sorrow, welcome pain, in

an hour flooded by the memory of my love.

    Welcome sighs and pain in

    true love, and welcome calamities.

Kindle it; do not say he has enough in

his world's tyranny and its sons' injustice.

For the captive of passion is not weakened by

the world's harshness or what he encounters within it,

    لا تُعيريها اهتِماماً وازدَريها

    nor by people's harm and the torments of thirst;

give them no heed, and scorn them.

Do not say that I fear death

and false accusations; do not say it—kindle it.

Kindle it, O daughter of light, for

the fires have died down—the fires of separation.

Gladden the faultfinders; make me wretched, for behold,

what they wished has happened; give me still more anguish.

And reopen every wound in me, and leave

my heart's wound alone, if it has drawn back from you.

In you I crave my death, seeking

every healer of mine who sees death as the cure.

Kindle it, and melt the feelings of one

whose feelings have frozen in his depths,

while he begs you insistently, and indeed

has called God to witness his resolve.

He has not found in love's paradise

    any pleasure, even if he drinks deeply from its rivers;

he has not found—he who complains of thirst—

rapture like that in its fire.

Kindle it; my horizon is overcast,

and the clouds of the horizon do not kill me.

And death's arrows have flown wide in the open sky,

and my wing no longer carries me.

And the son of my side has spent the night in his sanctuary,

    beating, hurrying me toward death;

he seeks the death for which he yearns,

    humbly, imploring, asking me:

Kindle it, that through it I may guide

my heart, drowning in the depths of the surging waters.

Perhaps, if I kindle it, I may guide

that lost part of me in the fog.

Or perhaps in it the soul will attain what

    it seeks of hopes and desires;

or perhaps it will reach the goal to which

it was blind—for youth may be blind.

Kindle it; perhaps it will inspire me with

    true inspiration and unfettered revelation.

Perhaps its heat will melt my chain,

and I will confide in you—the blaze may inspire—

    placing in every tearful melody

of my song the moan of my tender heart:

a moan that, if I send it forth, makes you forget

the thirsty one's sigh and the drowning one's choking gasps.

Kindle it, and leave me silent and downcast,

hurling fire at the phantoms of my youth.

And lament a bygone time in which I was

bewildered, questioning the specters of dusk.

And when the fire dies down tomorrow,

and I have attained the wishes I hoped for,

and when it lowers its curtains,

and the role is over, remember the first of the victims.
