دَعانيsummoned me داعِياthe two heralds of مُضَرٍMudar جَميعاًboth together
وَأَنفُسُهُمand their lives تَدانَتdrew near لِاِختِناقِto strangulation
Both heralds of Mudar summoned me,
The caller called me altogether,
while their lives drew close to strangulation.
And their souls succumbed to suffocation,
فَكانَتso it was دَعوَةًa call جَمَعَتthat united نِزاراًNizar
وَلَمَّتand reunited شَعثَهاits scattered ranks بَعدَafter الفِراقِseparation
So it was a call that united Nizar,
So it was a call that gathered resolve,
and reunited its scattered ranks after separation.
And ignited its dishevelment after separation.
أَجَبناwe answered داعِيَيthe two heralds of مُضَرٍMudar وَسِرناand we marched
إِلىtoward الأَملاكِthe kings بِالقُبِّon the lean steeds العِتاقِthe noble-bred
We answered Mudar's two heralds and marched
We answered the caller of Mudar and marched
toward the kings on lean, noble-bred steeds.
To the kingdoms with determination and freedom.
عَلَيهاupon them كُلُّevery أَبيَضَfair-faced, noble man مِنof نِزارٍNizar
يُساقيhe plies with drink المَوتَdeath كَرهاًagainst their will مَنwhoever يُساقيhe shares a cup with
On them rode every fair-faced warrior of Nizar,
Upon it every Mudari white-skinned warrior
making whoever shares his cup drink death against their will.
Who forces death reluctantly upon who he forces it upon.
أَمامَهُمُbefore them عُقابُthe eagle of المَوتِdeath يَهويswoops down
هُوِيَّthe plunge of الدَلوِthe bucket أَسلَمَهاlet it go العَراقيthe bucket's crossbars
Before them the eagle of death swoops down,
Before them the talons of death swoop down,
like a bucket plunging when its crossbars let it go.
Swooping like a bucket a victim of Iraq.
فَأَردَيناso we slew المُلوكَthe kings بِكُلِّwith every عَضبٍkeen sword
وَطارَand took flight هَزيمُهُمtheir routed host حَذَرَfor fear of اللَحاقِbeing overtaken
So we slew the kings with every keen sword,
So we repelled the kings with all wrath
and their routed host took flight for fear of being overtaken.
And their defeat fled avoiding contact.
كَأَنَّهُمُas though they were النَعامُthe ostriches غَداةَon the morning when خافواthey feared
بِذيat Dhu السُلّانِal-Sullan قارِقَةَthe clamor of (sense uncertain) التَلاقيthe clash
They seemed like ostriches on the morning they feared
As if they were ostriches the morning they feared
at Dhu al-Sullan the clamor of the clash.
The one with the Sultan, the separator of unions.
فَكَمso how many a مَلِكٍking أَذَقناهُwe made him taste المَناياdeath
وَآخَرَand another قَدindeed جَلَبناwe brought فيin الوِثاقِbonds
How many a king we made taste death,
So how many kings did we make taste death,
and another we have brought in bonds.
And others we brought in shackles.
