Al-Zir recited verses from his innermost thoughts.

Honor lies in the sword, not in wealth.

Shaybun sent for me on the day of battle.

He wanted to fight and kill me, not my champions.

I advised him against fighting me, but he would not heed me.

I dueled with him, and he fell to the ground at once.

Wealth builds houses that have no pillars,

And poverty tears down houses whose roofs are high.

Let fate's decrees run with free rein,

And never spend the night except free of care.

Between an eye's glance and its flutter,

God changes one state into another.

So be evenhanded with people, like the scales,

And never say, "This is my paternal uncle, and this my maternal uncle."

    والخالُ من كنت من اضرارهِ خالِ

    A paternal uncle is one in whose bounty you are immersed;

And a maternal uncle is one from whose harm you are free.

None severs the head but the one who sets it in place.

Nor does abundant wealth ward off death.
