لَقَدindeed عَلِمتُI know وَماand not الإِسرافُextravagance مِنof خُلُقيmy nature
أَنَّthat الَّذيthat which هُوَit رِزقيmy sustenance سَوفَwill يَأتينيcomes to me
I know full well—and extravagance is not in my nature—
that my allotted sustenance will come to me:
أَسعىI strive لَهُfor it فَيُعَنّينيso it wearies me تَطَلُّبُهُseeking it
وَلَوand even if جَلَستُI sat أَتانيit came to me لاnot يُعَنّينيit wearies me
I strive for it, and seeking it wearies me,
though even if I sat still, it would come to me without wearying me;
وَأَنَّand that حَظَّthe share اِمرىءٍof a man غَيريother than me سَيَبلُغُهُwill reach him
لاno بُدَّescape لاno بُدَّescape أَنthat يَحتازَهُhe secures it دونيto my exclusion
and that another man's share will reach him:
inevitably, inevitably, he will secure it, not I.
لاno خَيرَgood فيin طَمَعٍgreed يُدنيbrings near لِمَنقَصَةٍto disgrace
وَغُبَّرٍand remnants مِنof كَفافِthe bare necessities العَيشِof life يَكفينيsuffices for me
There is no good in greed that leads to disgrace;
and scraps of life's bare sustenance suffice for me.
لاnot أَركَبُI undertake الأَمرَthe affair تُزريbring disgrace بيupon me عَواقِبُهُits consequences
وَلاnor يُعابُis reproached بِهِbecause of it عِرضيmy honor وَلاnor دينيmy faith
I undertake no affair whose consequences disgrace me,
nor is my honor or my faith reproached because of it.
كَمhow many مِنof فَقيرٍa poor man غَنِيِّrich النَفسِthe soul تَعرِفُهُyou know him
وَمِنand of غَنِيٍّa rich man فَقيرِpoor النَفسِthe soul مِسكينِwretched
How many a poor man, rich in spirit, you know,
and many a rich man, poor in spirit and wretched!
وَمِنand of عَدُوٍّan enemy رَمانيhe shot at me لَوif قَصَدتُI aimed لَهُat him
لَمdid not يَأخُذِobtain النِصفَan equal share مِنّيfrom me حينَwhen يَرمينيhe shoots at me
And many an enemy has shot at me—had I aimed at him,
he would have been no match for me as he shot at me.
وَمِنand of أَخٍa brother ليof mine طَوىhe folded كَشحاًa flank فَقُلتُso I said لَهُto him
إِنَّindeed اِنطِواءَكَyour turning away عَنّيfrom me سَوفَwill يَطوينيmake me turn away
And many a brother of mine turned his flank away, so I told him:
“Indeed, your turning away from me will make me turn away.”
إِنّيindeed I لَأَنطُقُI certainly speak فيماabout what كانَis مِنamong إِرَبيmy concerns
وَأُكثِرُand I often keep الصَمتَsilence فيماabout what لَيسَdoes not يَعنينيconcern me
I do indeed speak of what concerns me,
and keep mostly silent about what does not concern me.
لاnot أَبتَغيI seek وَصلَunion with مِنone who يَبغيseeks مُفارَقَتيparting from me
وَلاnor أَلينُam I gentle لِمَنtoward one who لاnot يَشتَهيdesires لينيmy gentleness
I seek no bond with one who seeks to part from me,
nor am I gentle with one who does not desire my gentleness.
