It is said that the breeze was once

strolling over the hills of Lebanon,

wandering, with no rest in him,

turning from one place toward another.

    in joy, bliss, and safety,

making himself warm, then cool, as she wished,

    according to the changing seasons.

what can he do without money

    and jewelry of splendid brilliance?

honor, he falls into humiliation and abasement,

standing behind the house's window, lamenting

with a moan like the bereaved one's wail.

At times he had the cooing of doves,

and at times the hissing of a viper.

a soul that had never before had a hand in wickedness.

procession, seeking to complete the marriage bond,

his patience failed; he rose in a lion's fury

and raised dust that filled the view.

made the people hear a toll of sorrows.

wedding was completed despite that frenzy.

seething with hatred like a volcano.

He roamed the earth, seeking help from the kings

of the winds, from every faithful helper:

    among Hayf, Za'za', and Daruj,

and Samum and the roaring tempest.

vast as a sea, surging like a flood,

sowing terror in the land and clothing—

through its dread—young men's crowns in gray.

Laying waste along his path to all he passed

    of the inhabited towns,

he reached the house, expecting to scatter it

    through the air like smoke,

Beside the child was his mother, in fear

    for him, trembling violently.

Then his strength vanished, and love triumphed

over him—for love holds sovereign power.

So he knelt beside her child, taking over from

her, rocking the cradle as servant boys do.
