Peace upon Egypt! Even were I to live for ages,

I would spend my whole life doing nothing but saluting her.

    Upon a homeland—were a man to choose a homeland

On earth, he would choose none kinder or more generous.

The sweetness of its Nile has spread among its people,

And both flowed, so you could not tell their waters apart.

There justice and the Nile have come to flow,

So the eye scarcely sees anyone destitute.

And it has become the free man's refuge throughout the East.

If injustice strikes him, he comes seeking redress.

It sets right whatever in his affairs has gone awry,

And hones whatever of his edge has been nicked.

Thus lands of justice are sweet as a wellspring,

And serve as a ladder to civilization and glory.

Oppressors have gained nothing but loss

And humiliation—nothing but sorrow and remorse.

Sister of Syria, make room for a young man of hers,

Whom the days have willed to be an orphan.

I have taken you as my mother, and have come to lay

At your feet my heart, my thought, and my blessings.

And whoever has a mother like Egypt

May rightly shed blood for her sake.

I shall unsheathe thought that had been sheathed before,

And release speech that had been bridled before.

And pierce the heart of hardship until it yields to me,

And strike the throne of ignorance until it is demolished.

May my poetry benefit the people; perhaps it

Will be my interpreter to the people of the East.

    فان يُصِبِ المرمى فحسبيَ مغنما

    It is nothing but an arrow of thought that I have shot;

If it hits the mark, that is gain enough for me.

I shall knock at the forefathers' tombs, communing with

Great men of whom time has left only bones.

Then I shall kiss that soil reverently,

And kneel beside it humbly, praying for mercy.

And ask those within it about the East: is there for it

A return? Perhaps the spirits will speak.

I long for the sorrowful East and its people,

And weep blood over the scattering of its peoples.

    And mourn that brilliance, squandered,

    And mourn that edifice, demolished.

I remember Baghdad and bow my head in sorrow,

And remember Harun and weep in pain.

And lament a glory that once shone in the East,

Then vanished, and the East became black and dusky.

I turn my whispered thoughts back to Egypt, and there lifts

The mist that settled over my tormented heart.

Through her I hope for the East's return and rebirth,

And through her I hope for goodness and blessings for the East.

The time has come for truth to appear among us,

And for that blindness to be lifted from our eyes.

O our brothers, do not make religion a divider,

For religion is only a bond joining earth to heaven.

We are only a part of this earth—have we the right

To undertake undoing what God has bound fast?

So do not heed a priest cloaked in evil,

Nor heed a sheikh turbaned in wickedness.

This tongue suffices as a bond, gathering us

To itself as equals, Christian and Muslim.
