O May, the days have not

left a single fancy in my mind.

What can he attempt in your praise—

a poet conscious of his inadequacy?

    His loved ones wronged him,

though he was never once unjust.

They did no justice to his affection,

    his integrity and noble deeds.

O May, were it not for your place

    in hearts and in consciences,

    وقبلُ ودَّعتُ المنابر

    my tongue would not have been loosed;

and I had already bid farewell to the rostrums.

How wondrous your renown throughout the lands—

it now travels the course of the sun!

Wine flowed from your reed pen,

    not what the inkwells held.

Rather, that is your very self upon the pages,

and that is your spirit in the notebooks.

It flowed along the edge of the reed pen,

as along the edge of keen swords.

O daughter of Lebanon, toward you

    the Nile hastens, humbled.

    You adorned both its banks

    with the jewels you scattered:

maxims and proverbs that have come

    to fill ears and eyes.

My longing is for that beloved land,

    and for its unveiled nights,

and for loved ones of ours there,

    radiant as its shining stars,

and for youth that passed there,

    as though it were a bird's edge [wording unclear];

    like perfume, whose substance vanishes,

    yet whose scent remains fragrant.

Lebanon, though your sins be many,

in May there is surely one who forgives.

    O May, between us lies

a bond of feelings and thoughts.

    You lament, bewildered, without

a homeland; my lament is likewise bewildered.
