لقاءُ حبيبٍ في الثرى وحبيبِ
My friend, wait for me; for after a little while
My friend, look at me, for soon
one beloved friend will meet another in the earth.
A meeting of two lovers in the grave, two lovers
ثلاثونthirty years لمnot تذنبyou wronged إليَّagainst me خلالهاduring them
ثلاثون لم تذنب إليَّ خلالها
بلrather كنتَyou were فيهاduring them غافراًforgiving لذنوبيof my sins
بل كنتَ فيها غافراً لذنوبي
Thirty years—you never wronged me throughout them;
For thirty years you did no wrong to me
rather, throughout them you forgave my sins.
Rather you were forgiving of my sins

An affection that ran the course of youth, and still remains
Affection has traversed the course of youth and still
as it first was, despite the onset of gray hair.
Remains as it was first, despite the onslaught of old age

It bears the ardor of a youth of twenty,
In him is the prime of a youth in his twenties
and within it, the wisdom of gray-haired elders of sixty.
And in him is the wisdom of a man in his sixties

Is it not strange that you are seen silent today,
Is it not strange today to see you silent
while around you, O Sarkis, is every orator?
With all around you, O Sarkis, lamenting

And whenever you sent your voice forth on high,
You whose voice used to rise high
you carried away our ears and hearts.
Taking hearts and minds away

You thrust against oppression's breast until you felled it
You who pushed back the chest of the unjust till felling him
with the edge of a reed pen, not the edge of a sword.
With the edge of a shepherd’s crook, not the edge of a rod

And you taught us freedom of speech, though before it lay
And who taught us the freedom of speech without
torments of souls you had tasted, and calamities.
The torment of souls who have tasted and seen affliction

My friend, by God, you have left my ear bereft,
My friend, you have saddened me, by Allah you have deafened me
yearning for speech rich in expression, fresh and fine.
To the measured, eloquent logic of expression

You pioneered a new, delightful style in epistolary prose,
You embarked anew, refined
and left me as a legacy for every writer.
And left me an inheritance for every man of letters

Such are the luminaries of genius: their path
Thus go the paths of genius
surely seems near, though it is not near.
Appearing near though far away
