إِذاif زيَّنَadorns الصدرَthe breast الوسامُthe medal فانماthen it is only
بصدركby your breast يزدانُis adorned الوسامُthe medal المذهَّبُgilded
If the medal adorns the breast, it is rather
When merit adorns the chest, then
Your breast that lends the gilded medal its splendor.
Your chest is adorned with gilded merit
وانand if يزهgrows vain إعجاباًin self-admiration سواكsomeone other than you بمثلهover one like it
فمثلكbut one like you لاnot يُزهىgrows vain ولاnor يتعجبis astonished
And if someone else swells with self-admiration over one like it,
And if others admire the like of it
Yet one like you neither grows vain nor feels astonished.
None can admire or marvel at your like
فليسfor he is not الذيthe one who يلقىencounters المعاليَlofty honors صدفةًby chance
كمنlike one whom عرفتهُthey knew him وهوwhile he فيin المَهدِthe cradle يلعبُplays
For one who encounters lofty honors by chance is not
For he who gains distinction by chance
Like one whom they knew as he played in the cradle.
Is not as one known since cradle days at play
وليسand he is not الذيthe one who يسعىstrives الوسامُthe medal لصدرهfor his breast
كمنlike one who باتspends the night يسعىstrives للوسامfor the medal ويطلبُand asks for it
And one whose breast the medal seeks is not
And he who seeks a medal for his chest
Like one who spends the night striving for the medal and asking for it.
Is not as one who sought and strove away
وهلand does يُعجبُimpress الإنسانَa person حسنbeauty وسامهِhis medal
إذاif لمnot تكنbe أوصافهُhis qualities الغرُّsplendid تُعجبُinspire admiration
And can the beauty of his medal impress a man,
And would man admire his medal’s grace
If his splendid qualities do not inspire admiration?
If his traits noble did not grace inspire?

You possess qualities whose fragrance wafts abroad,
You have the traits whose diffusion was lost
And qualities sweeter and more fragrant than the choicest wine.
Sweeter than wine old, pure or mixed entire

Virtues—if nature possessed their like,
Had nature your traits, her spring
There would be a spring of everlasting bloom and fragrance.
Eternal blooms, scenting sweet fire

And when the caliph saw in you a sincere man,
When in you the Caliph truthful saw
Who desired nothing but love for his native lands,
Zeal beyond lands, he did admire

So may you ever remain, O Alfred, the object of his favor,
So you, Alfred, won his kindness still
May that beloved crescent shelter you.
Bathed in the crescent’s glow, beloved

You have received from him a third-class medal, then a second-class one,
Thrice third, twice second, honors gained
And now I see a first-class one drawing near you.
And now I, foremost, draw near
