I pass by the graves, with yearning within me,

and longing for the one who dwells in the dust.

I say, having stopped beside him, while my tears

form a string of bubbles upon his grave's soil.

And around me, death's stillness inspires

reverence and disquiet in my heart.

Peace to you, O you who rest in a grave

whose solemn majesty shades it like a veil.

O Elias, I see you have gone far from us,

and have not remembered your dear family and companions.

And we never knew you, my beloved,

to prolong your absence from those who love you.

If only you could see how your home has become

clothed in a mist of sorrow.

Bewilderment circles through it among crowds

who lost their reason at your death.

For your mother, bereaved, beats both cheeks,

and calls out 'Elias!'—but there is no answer.

And your grieving father, bereft of reason,

has become like a child, sobbing bitterly.

And your brothers, who have become bewildered

by your calamity, can give no reply.

And your family and companions have tears

in which their very souls pour forth.

And oh, the heart's anguish for one departed,

at whose death the heart of kindness melted!

And oh, the sciences' anguish for a martyr

who spent himself in loving pursuit of them!

My friend, by God, I shall never forget,

throughout my life, your sweet virtues.

Nor shall I forget our gatherings,

in whose haunts we spent our youth.

Whenever a crescent appears on the horizon,

it reminds me of your crescent, where it set.

And if the east wind bends a tender branch,

I recall the severing of your tender branch.

So sleep, my companion; sleep in peace,

until God brings the companions together.

And never fear the clouds being held back,

if their water refuses to pour down.

For I have watered your grave from my eyes,

with enough to spare it the need for clouds forever.
