How strange—you try to earn a lampoon!

Had you ever, before today, earned praise?

Where is al-Mushir, and where are those bygone days

when you filled both horizons with enmity?

Have you forgotten that war, when you stirred it up,

    and launched that ferocious onslaught,

when you readied a reed pen for a steed,

    and insolence and foul abuse for weapons;

and when people shunned you just as

    they shun a mangy she-goat;

and when your accursed name alone sufficed

to bring its utterer torment as recompense?

Have you forgotten al-Hawd prison, when you entered it,

and the black nights that passed there?

And the sea, when you sailed it like a thief,

fearing spying eyes and wary of the watchers,

unable to cast a glance behind you

for fear of finding soldiers at your back?

Alas for this pen that you unsheathed—

if only it had pleased as much as it has hurt!

Alas for this literary skill you were given—

if only you had been given modesty along with it!

And today, now that you have repented of the past

    and abandoned that crooked course,

you buried your old principle and said: “May no

mercy from God reach ignorance and the ignorant!”

And you befriended those you once opposed, while those

who were your friends became enemies,

running along with whims, knowing that

there is no profit unless you serve those whims.

Who, then, seeks your affection after this,

and who accepts affection merely for show?

By God, none befriends you except one who fears

the barbs and harm of this tongue.

And if fear is affection’s foundation,

then a spider’s web is more firmly built than it.

Do not be deceived by your vast fame, which

    has filled the lands and regions with your name;

for evil spreads as swiftly as can be,

while goodness walks with a crooked gait.

And a drum’s sound is heard from afar,

yet when you examine it, you find air inside.

As for me, in either case I have never

ceased to show you affection and brotherhood.

I accept you with these faults, and I see no

way, to my misfortune, of doing without you.

As with graceful beauties: we love them despite their flaws

and see in them both our sickness and our cure.

This is your lampoon, O Salim, and indeed

it pains me that I undertake satire.

I would not have turned to it, had you not

set a handsome prize for it.

And as you know, we are in a crisis

that has left neither yellow gold nor white silver.

Perhaps, then, you will propose a panegyric, so you may see

from me praise as radiant as the morning.

But I shall not craft fine praise for you

    unless you double what you give me;

for lampooning someone like you takes no effort,

while I find praising you a burden and a hardship.
