    Yesterday you were the goddess of lovers,

    intoxicating the throng, yet never drunk yourself.

    فَلِماذا أَمسَيتِ لا تَبسَمينا

    And indeed, you used to smile with good fortune;

    why, then, have you ceased to smile?

    What caused your melancholy, so that

    the symbol of beauty became a sorrowful symbol?

    Sorrow darkened a light within your eyes

    that yesterday enchanted those who gazed.

    Where is that beauty? Where is the brow

    that never before showed us these wrinkles?

    And are these wrinkles not symbols

    that have remained a secret buried in the heart?

    Lighten the tread of your walk today, lest

    your walk become the step of dancers.

    You were accustomed only to a coquettish walk,

    with which you used to deceive even love.

    Lighten your walk, for in the dust lies a heart

    that returned to clay today, after your sin.

    Do not heed love; walk over it.

    Love's covenant is nothing but madness.

    Do not heed conscience if ever

    it one day utters the words of the compassionate:

    فَاِستَحي اليَومَ لا تُهيني المنونا

    You have dishonored life after Ali;

    so be ashamed today; do not dishonor death.

    If debauchery comes from Ali, then from you come

    debauchery and injustice—how vile is what you do!

    You corrupted him when he was a youth,

    then made him one of the squanderers.

    Take off your jewels and exchange them

    for shackles, more fitting for those who shed blood.

    كَيفَ تُبقينَها وَلا تَخجلينا

    These jewels come from Ali's blood;

    how can you keep them and not be ashamed?

    لَيسَ صَوتُ الضَميرِ إِلّا مُجونا

    Do not heed a voice, O Marguerite;

    the voice of conscience is nothing but wanton jesting.

    And dance, if you wish, over dust

    that enfolded a lover's heart and eyes.

    كَيفَ يا غادَة الدما تَجنينا

    And cast sorrow off, for sorrow is cowardice;

    how, O maiden of blood, do you sin?

    [Unclear word]—sacrifice conscience in every circumstance,

    and bid bloodshed come to pass among mankind.
