What illness is wasting him? What illness?

O my God, O savior of the innocent!

What illness is wasting him? For over his eyes

lies a specter with a black brow.

Each passing night steals from him

flowers that my blood has tended.

I was told he would recover, but

his eyes have disappeared beneath a veil,

a veil through which a trace of soul shows,

in which there is no shred of hope for the mother.

His color yesterday was different from today's; indeed, the

illness erases from him the beauty of youth.

Lord, have mercy; do not bring my heart low

through my beloved, nor darken my evening.

Lord, do not strike the sorrowful woman with bereavement,

nor try me with this affliction.

Do not let me, Lord, carry my pains

before those of my children who remain.

Do not stain my white hairs with despair,

    O solace of white motherhood.

And for a while she listened to hear the voice of God,

while God was aloof in heaven.

So it was as though the sky were an edifice of copper,

and as though the darkness were a throne of fate,

and as though the stars on the balcony of night

    were shroud-candles for the living.

And the sick one's eyes struggle ever more in death's throes,

the more his soul grows in radiance.
