To whom, I wonder, can I complain with my streaming tears,

when I have no faithful friend in Lebanon?

I had indeed bestowed kindness on every companion,

yet my companions denied all the kindness I had shown.

Shall I complain to the law of my companions' treachery,

when the law itself is now trampled underfoot?

    وَلَمّا اِدَّرعتُ الصِدقَ أَنكَرَني أَهلي

    When I sought the light, the multitude disowned me;

and when I donned truth as armor, my kin disowned me.

Once, a man from my country rebelled,

and aimed two arrows of reproach at me,

because I do not walk the path of an ignoramus

who strides, nose held high, through the darkness of ignorance.

Had he possessed reason joined with loyalty,

he would not have made ignorance, reason's deceiver, the judge.

But he blinded himself to his own guidance, because he

was stricken by the world with a touch of madness.

Yesterday I saw a young woman to whom I am bound

by a love that grew in my breast, whole and united.

On her sweet, dusky lips is a pure soul's smile,

illuminating the dark night of her luxuriant hair.

I told her: I remain steadfast in affection,

but my absence will destroy our union.

For I shall travel far from my country,

since I cannot bear injustice in this barren land.

Here I saw a group of people who preferred

that oppression's hand rise and strike justice down.

You saw them with fetters around their necks,

and their hands bound fast in shackles.

A band from the lowest of humankind leads them,

trying to spit venom into them like an asp.

It spreads among them doctrines born of self-interest,

more devastating to the body of society than consumption.

It wants them blind to light, while darkness

hangs over truth, veil upon veil.

    وَلكِن سَوادُ الهَدبِ أَبقى مِن الكَحلِ

    And it mocks anyone who does not listen to it;

yet the blackness of lashes outlasts kohl.

She said: Be truth set free among humankind,

and let the earth's insects crawl in the mud.

    وَثابِر عَلى كَشفِ الظَلامِ بِلا مَطلِ

    You are not one whose striving grief can hinder;

persevere in dispelling darkness without delay.

Your existence in this world is to serve a principle,

so, if you are noble-hearted, do not build it on sand.

Dictate the teachings of life to the multitude,

for the hand of generations writes what you dictate.

Do not enslave your soul for the sake of a desire,

and trample the tyrants' vermin beneath your shoe.

For whoever deems the violation of rights lawful for an end,

is more deserving of contempt and degradation.

And offer, with the free, a song of exaltation,

for the free man is but the nightingale of glory and nobility.

And the free man is none other than that laborer who

trod upon the heads of servitude and humiliation.

He is the free man, the symbol of truth, the symbol of a virtue

that journeys with the generations in ennobling honor.

He melted his brain upon the embers of life,

and turned it into oil that lights the paths.

The daughter of generations speaks, looking down

from the loftiest temple upon the world of posterity:

Who, I wonder, saw existence laid in ruins before me?

And who saw the free as builders before me?

Here the young woman grew still and gazed

toward the heavenly assembly with her wide eyes.

And from her mouth shines the light of equality,

declaring that the king, in his created nature, is like me.

And freedom has dawned from her brow,

and an emblem of brotherhood, and peace upon all.
