عَرائِسُbrides الدلبِthe plane trees عَلىupon الشاطيءِthe shore
يُذَوَّبُis dissolved النَومُsleep بِأَحداقِهاin their pupils
The plane-tree brides upon the shore—
Sleep is dissolved within their eyes—
هادِئَةٌcalm كَالنَهَرِlike the river الهادىءِcalm
تحلُمُdream فيin خُضرَةِthe greenness of أَوراقِهاtheir leaves
Calm as the calm river,
Dream in the green of their leaves.
وَدوحَةُand the spreading tree الرابيَةِthe hill الآمِنَهpeaceful
صامِتَةٌsilent ماذاwhat تُرىI wonder تَكتُمُconceals
And the spreading tree on the peaceful hill
Is silent—what, I wonder, does it conceal?
ساكِنَةٌstill فيin الساعَةِthe hour الساكِنَهstill
كَشَيخَةٍlike an old woman فيin أَمسِهاher past تَحلُمُdreams
Still in the still hour,
Like an old woman dreaming of her past.
لاno حسَّsound لِلشَحرورِfrom the blackbird بَينَamong الوَرَقthe leaves
وَالبُلبُلُand the nightingale الثَرثارُchattering لاnot يُنشِدُsings
No sound from the blackbird among the leaves,
And the chattering nightingale does not sing.
وَالريحُand the wind مَلَّتhas tired of فيin الحُقولِthe fields الأَرَقsleeplessness
فَهيَso it عَلىupon أَعشابِهاtheir grass تَرقُدُlies asleep
And the wind has tired of sleeplessness in the fields,
So it lies asleep upon their grass.
أَسمَعُI hear فيin الواديthe valley رَنينَthe ringing of الجَرَسthe bell
يُذيبُdissolves روحَthe spirit of اللَهِGod فيwithin المُتعَبينthe weary
I hear in the valley the ringing of the bell,
Dissolving God's spirit within the weary.
فَتَنحَنيso bows نَفسيmy soul وَيُصغيand listens النَفَسbreath
وَيَطهُرُand grows pure الحُبُّlove وَيَنقىand becomes pure الحَنينlonging
So my soul bows, and breath listens,
And love is cleansed, and longing grows pure.
