The full moon stripped away the darkness with light,

And wept, its tears a frenzy of love.

And the lips utter nothing, out of reverence.

And the cross of peace has become dust.

Hearts do not die if into

Their depths heaven's fingertips pour love.

She gave him a farewell glance,

Then shed love's tears in torrents.

Love's specter, bearing in its hands

    A beauty's heart, beating and love-stricken.

It is a symbol of Mary's heart, a symbol

Of a passion that found life wearisome,

So it hid away to sleep in death, but

Had made eternity its sleeping place therein.

Mary cried out with a wounded heart:

Have they unjustly carried out the execution?

Why have they strengthened sin through you?

That bore the days within its radiance.

My beloved, why are the flowers sorrowful,

    Closing their bud-sheaths over beauty?

And the flowing brook runs ominously,

    Singing melodies in its sobbing.

Why are my eyes slowly clouding over,

    And slowly driving humankind away?

    Ah, eyes live through love,

And when parted, they become widowed.

I shall join you soon, so prepare

Love's tent among the lavender blossoms.

Then the flowers will revive the memory of a life

In which passion ordained an order for us.

A tent for passion, which love lines,

And whose existence refuses to end.

    Everlasting, and were not dreams.

Thinking the sky had become a blaze.

Then he saw the universe in great turmoil,

And saw crime among its peoples.

The way of injustice—all had followed it,

And justice had become wickedness and punishment.

So all the peoples became vile.

Their religion divided the people; no peace

Brings gentleness and harmony among them.

So the peace of concord became wars,

And the cross of harmony became a sword.

So today he wept for peace, but

What he had wept for yesterday was strife.
