Rafina, come with a cup of wine and an ember

For my hookah; then close the door and go.

And do not let my mother wake from slumber,

For I shall spend the night inside my study.

It is night; there is no sound there, and no

Companion to soothe my misery but a star,

That wandered by night through the expanse of infinity,

Like the heart of a tormented lover.

    Suad, many months have passed,

And my heart walks through pitch-black gloom.

Thorns surround it on every side,

As though I had hidden a thousand scorpions among them.

    وَهذا فُؤادي يَشهَدُ اللَهُ فَاِسكُبي

    Come, dissolve your cruelty in love, if you wish;

And here is my heart—God bears witness—so pour it in.

If a claw of time has worn me down,

Then my claw must prevail over time.

Suad, I see ailments gnawing at my frame,

And above me death’s raven sings—so rejoice.

Have you not seen how the young men flocked in?

But each has an aim unlike mine.

Leave me, leave me, and follow someone other than a lover,

Who is great-hearted and sweet in his wooing.

    أَتَنتَظرينَ السَعدَ من شاعِرٍ صَبي

    I am still young, my life at the very dawn of youth;

Do you expect happiness from a boy poet?

Suad, tomorrow you will lay your pure neck

Upon the chest of that sweating suitor,

And forget the one whose tears would melt

Upon the kohl dissolved within your eyes.

Yes, forget him, for he is a lovesick sinner,

And more deserving of oblivion than any sinner.

Is love not a sin, as some of them have said?

Then I am a culprit, for love rests upon my shoulder.

But tomorrow, do not remember the blossoms and the hills,

Nor the jasmine of the field after sunset.

    فَلا تَلمِسيهِ بِاِذّكارٍ مكذَّبِ

    For the remembrance of those traces is sacred;

So do not touch it with a false remembrance.
