رباهُO my Lord عَفوَكَYour pardon إِنّيindeed I كافِرٌan unbeliever جانِa sinner
جَوَّعتُI starved نَفسيmy soul وَأَشبَعتُand I sated الهَوىdesire الفانيfleeting
O my Lord, Your pardon! I am an unbeliever, a sinner.
My Lord, I beg Your pardon, for I am an unfaithful servant
I starved my soul and sated fleeting desire.
I starved my soul and indulged fleeting passions
تَبِعتُI followed فيamong الناسِpeople أَهواءًdesires مُحَرَّمَةًforbidden
وَقلتُand I said لِلنّاسِto people قَولاًa saying عَنهُfrom it تَنهانيYou forbid me
Among people, I followed forbidden desires,
I followed forbidden desires among people
And said to people what You forbid me to say.
And told them words You forbid me to say
وَلمand did not أُفِقI regain my senses مِنfrom جُنونِmadness القَلبِthe heart فيon سُبُليmy paths
إِلاuntil وَقَدand already مَحَتِerased الأَهواءُdesires إيمانيmy faith
And on my paths I did not awaken from my heart's madness
Lost in the madness of my heart on my path
Until desires had already erased my faith.
Until passions erased my faith
رَبّاهُO my Lord عَفوَكYour pardon إِنّيindeed I كافِرٌan unbeliever جانِa sinner
O my Lord, Your pardon! I am an unbeliever, a sinner.
My Lord, I beg Your pardon, for I am an unfaithful servant
How often have desires called me to sins
لَكَمhow often دَعَتنيcalled me إِلىto الفَحشاءِindecency أَميالُinclinations
وَأَنذَرَتنيand warned me تَجاريبٌexperiences وَأَهوالُand terrors
How often inclinations called me to indecency,
And trials and horrors warned me
And experiences and terrors warned me.
Trials are lessons for the wise
إِنindeed التَجاريبَexperiences لِلأَلبابِfor discerning minds مَوعِظَةٌa moral lesson
لكِنَّهاbut they لِأُليfor those given to الأَضلالِerrors أَضلالُerrors
Indeed, experiences are a lesson for discerning minds,
But for the misguided they lead further astray
But for those given to error, they are further errors.
Those nights of sin, still their ruins
تِلكَthose اللَياليnights المواضيbygone لاnot يَزالُceases لَهاfor them
بَينَamong الخَرائِبِthe ruins فيin عَينَيَّmy eyes أَطلالُremnants
Those bygone nights still have
Remain before my eyes in decay
Remnants amid the ruins in my eyes.
Alas my regrets, my heart still holds
وَآحسرَتاهalas for me وَقَلبيand my heart لاnot يَزالُceases لَهُfor it
فيin لَذَّةِthe pleasure العارِshame أَوطارٌdesires وَآمالُand hopes
Alas for me! And my heart still has
In the pleasure of disgrace, hopes and dreams
Desires and hopes in the pleasure of shame.
