    No tears have fallen from my eyes

    Except upon the noblest rose of love.

    Those are the heart's tears; I have melted them,

    And in the heart's tears lies a hidden secret.

    How many a night I have spent awake,

    With no companion but my book.

    At times I commune with my cigarette's fire,

    And at others I gaze at the letters.

    And in my heart dwell the same sorrows of love

    As in the heart of the poet al-Ahnaf.

    O May, the family has no place

    Between the languid-eyed and the lovesick.

    بِغَيرِ هذا الحُبِّ لم نكلفِ

    We have a way of our own in our love;

    We have been enamored of no love but this.

    So let them leave us to our whispered talk,

    And let them respect the sanctity of a faithful love.

    So let them leave us to gather our dream

    Among jasmine and double-flowered jasmine blooms.

    أَمتَّ لي حَظّي وَلَم تَكتَفِ

    O Time, I am still a beardless youth;

    You killed my fortune, yet were not content.

    No sooner had its flowers opened in the morning

    Than the hand of the icy gale blighted them.

    I draw each breath with difficulty,

    Like the light of a lamp that seems to be going out.

    يَكادُ لَولا ثَوبِهِ يَختَفي

    And my body is ravaged by its sickness;

    It would almost vanish, but for its garment.

    And I have a life whose fortune is black,

    Like my dark, pitch-black night.

    In my despair I have come to love the dark,

    For in the dark lies the image of unseen death.

    Until, when I find it departing,

    I tell the darkness within it, 'Stay!'

    أَشكو وَما من سامِعٍ منصفِ

    My Lord, You did not create me wretched;

    I complain, with no fair-minded listener.

    As though I were a criminal in this world who had committed

    A most shameful, abhorrent deed.

    أَحبَبتُ فيها حُسنها اليوسفي

    Yet my only sin is that I am a young man:

    I loved the Joseph-like beauty in her;

    I loved the soul within her, watering

    Her rose with my streaming tears.

    If what they have called love is a disgrace,

    Then this disgrace is what I choose.
