    My beloved, upon this hill,

I feel your image lifting me.

So I close—to all but what is loved by

Your spirit—my heart and my lashes.

I have come to love you in what you love

And what lends vigor to your inspiration.

For what made poetry flow from your heart and tongue

    Has gathered in this place.

I see it upon the bend and the bay,

    And in this flowing forest,

And in what nourishes the vines' roots,

And what the vineyard holds for the earthenware jar.

I see it upon the farmers' hope,

In the season of field and herd,

And in the grandeur of plane trees and oaks,

Leaning tenderly over the watercourse's repose.

I have come to love you in what you love

And bolt my door against humankind.

For my world is nothing but the meaning of beauty:

I love you in it; you love me.

My wakefulness is steeped in your spirit,

And my dreams are intoxicated by your enchantment.

And my dream of your love never ends—

And can conscious oblivion ever end?

The sources of your inspiration: bound

To my heart and my eyelids are their visions.

For in every nook there is a storyteller among the birds,

And at every bend, a teller of tales.

From the earth I inhale the fragrances of your poetry,

    Moist as dew, and pure.

I feel a burning thirst for them deep within me,

Trotting along the glow of my veins.

And I hear a sound like a deep whisper,

So I listen, that my depths may hear.

And I see what eyes do not see,

So I enfold it, like God, within my being.

    My beloved, upon this hill,

I offer my faith to love.

If love forsakes the world of hearts,

Then what good is the wreckage that remains?
