دَعينِيَlet me أَندُبُlament كَالثاكِلِlike one bereaved
فَلَستُfor I am not سِوىanything but عاشِقٍa lover راحلِdeparting
Let me lament like one bereaved.
For I am only a departing lover.
حَمَلتُI carried الهَوىlove فيin فُؤاديmy heart الضَعيفِfrail
فَأَثقَلَand it weighed down حَملُthe burden of الهَوىlove كاهِليmy shoulders
I carried love in my frail heart,
and the burden of love weighed down my shoulders.
دَعينيlet me أَموتُdie فَإِنَّfor indeed الزَمانtime
تَردَّدَechoed فيin قَلبِيَmy heart الناحِلِwasting
Let me die, for time
has echoed in my wasting heart.
وَإِنَّand indeed الدَقائِقَthe minutes قَدalready أَسَرَعَتsped
بِصَدرِيَthrough my chest فيin سَيرِهاtheir course العاجِلِhurried
And the minutes have sped
through my chest in their hurried course.
دَعينيlet me أَموتُdie فَإِنّيfor I am فَتىًa young man
تَحَمَّلتُI bore فَوقَbeyond قوىthe strength of الحامِلِthe bearer
Let me die, for I am a young man;
I have borne more than a bearer can.
قَطَعتُI crossed هِضابَthe hills of الحَياةِlife صَغيراًwhile young
وَصِرتُand I became قَريباًnear مِنto الساحِلِthe shore
I crossed the hills of life while young,
and have drawn near the shore.
دَعينيlet me أَموتُdie وَلاand do not تَنثُريscatter
دُموعاًtears عَلىover هَيكَلٍa frame خامِلِlifeless
Let me die, and do not scatter
tears over a lifeless frame.
فَدَمعُfor the tears of الهَوىlove منamong بَناتِthe daughters of الخُلودِeternity
فَلاso do not تَهرِقيهِshed them عَلىover زائِلِone who passes away
For love’s tears are daughters of eternity;
do not shed them over one who passes away.
دَعينيlet me أَموتُdie فَحَظّيfor my fortune التَعيسُwretched
هَوىfell مَعwith كَوكَبِهِits star الآفلِsetting
Let me die, for my wretched fortune
fell with its setting star.
دَعينيlet me أَموتُdie فَصخرfor the rock of رَجائيmy hope
تحطّمُهshatters it مَوجةُa wave of الباطِلِfalsehood
Let me die, for the rock of my hope
is shattered by a wave of falsehood.
وَماand what كُنتُI was أَؤملُهُhoping for سابِقاًformerly
خُدعتُI was deceived بهِby it خدعَةَwith the deception of الجاهِلِa fool
And what I once hoped for
deceived me as it would a fool.
