Is this your beauty or mine? For I

see in you someone, like me, whose love is beautiful.

And this by which I live—is it you or I?

And this that I adore—is it your form or mine?

And when I see in dreams an image of love,

is it your shadow flowing through my inner self, or mine?

Has all love enthroned itself in everything I see,

or your universal spirit—this universal radiance?

Did I create you in the world of visions, or did you create me?

And did I come to inspiration before you, or did you come to it before me?

And did you compose poetry about me, or did I compose it about you?

And who, in love, is dictated to, and who dictates?

I feel my imagination flowing through yours,

and your spirit in my spirit, and your mind in my mind.

Whenever something obscure appears in my imagination,

I see a light for it growing clear in your eyes.

As though you were the half of my being I had lost,

and when we met, I found my way back to my source.
