أُحِبُّكِI love you حينَwhen أَراكِI see you تَنوحينَyou wail
وَالدَمعُand the tears يَقطُرُdrip منfrom ناظِريكِyour two eyes
I love you when I see you wailing,
I love when I see you grieving,
and tears drip from your eyes.
And tears dripping from your eyes.
وَأَهوىand I love تَقطُّعَthe breaking أَوتارِstrings صَوتa voice
يُصعِّدُهُraises it الحُزنُsorrow منfrom مرشَفَيكِyour two lips
And I love the breaking of the strings of a voice
I adore when sorrow makes your voice
that sorrow sends rising from your lips.
Quaver as it rises from your balcony.
أُحِبُّI love العَذابَtorment وَأَهوىand I love البُكاءَweeping
وَأَعشَقُand I adore كَأسَthe cup الضَناanguish فيin يَدَيكِyour two hands
I love torment and I love weeping,
I love torment and yearn for weeping,
and I adore the cup of anguish in your hands.
And passionately desire the cup of distress in your hands.
وَعِنديand in my view أَنَّthat إِرتِواءَdrinking one's fill الدُموعِthe tears
دُموعtears المُؤاساتِconsolation منfrom مُقلَتَيكِyour two eyes
And I believe that drinking one's fill of tears—
To me, quenching my thirst with tears
tears of consolation from your eyes—
Of compassion from your eyes is best.
لِاَفضَلُindeed better منthan قُبُلاتِkisses الغَرامِlove
يَشرَبُهاdrinks them الفَمُthe mouth منfrom وَجنَتَيكِyour two cheeks
is indeed better than love's kisses,
Better than kisses of passion
which the mouth drinks from your cheeks.
That the mouth drinks from your cheeks.
