I hurried to your door to knock upon it,

in a night whose veil had darkened.

    And Shibli's poem, listening attentively,

heard the song of my heart.

Then your father awoke, and in his hand

was the room's lamp, which he held aloft.

And he answered, “Rashid has not returned,

and Jamil's bed has sheltered him.”

So I concealed the secret, and within my liver

I was cutting the lyre of fortune to pieces.

And I returned with a rent in my love—

a garment I had not mended.

My lord, with a child in his hand,

torments him however his whim wills.

So whenever he draws him close with a smile

of his, he thrusts him away with force.

His lips are the fruits of purity,

and his arms are branches of lilies.

And the eye is a lake of dreams,

    in which his tears ripple.

I do not forget the night he sang me

a melody, while love gave it rhythm,

and the horizon was a bed already strewn

    with flowers that perfumed it.

O Hind, my heart suffers from ailments,

so the slightest coldness pains it.

So guide it to your eyes, for in

your eyes is a remedy that helps it.

    سَيَثورُ عَلَيكِ ترفُّعُهُ

    O Hind, my heart has had enough of arguments;

its pride will rebel against you.

So bribe it with affection: it will be content,

for argument does not convince it.
