How is the sick man? What has happened to him?

How has he fared this evening, I wonder, and in what condition?

At this question of yours, my heart

stands today, cutting off its hopes.

What good is wailing, sister of my soul?

I am death’s allotted share, without a doubt.

Every night I see the image of my grave,

and see death preparing itself there.

Once I tried to console myself, but

the sickness in my chest leaves no solace.

Erase yesterday’s memories; it is better

for you that no remnant of yesterday remain.

    أَمحَقيها فَالذِكرَياتُ ضَلالَه

    Erase them, for the sake of my soul and my love;

erase them, for memories are a delusion.

And know that a tear shed over one you love

beneath the earth harms his shade.

I read it and held back tears

that, poured into the Nile, would overwhelm its majesty:

tears from the melting of a wounded heart

that, poured into the wasteland, would stain its sands with blood.

I kept them from the letter so

the tears would not dishonor that letter.

It was as though the darkness were a sick man, coughing

again and again along the shores among the palms.

Then a shudder swept its wings over it

as night folded up its shadows.

And dawn came pale above the waves,

as though the coughing troubled its mind.
