Do you not see the branches, drenched by rain?

They swayed drunkenly, with neither nectar nor wine.

The maidens of poetry peered through their openings,

their green pens fashioned from the grass's fingertips.

They peered out, their eyes once slumbering,

while that magic dissolved within their dreams.

As though a friend's call had awakened them,

they sprang up, joy smiling in their countenance.

And when they saw him, they gazed at his brow,

and saw remembrance, wounded by separation.

They could not hold back their tears, and down streamed

their crimson tears over their rosy cheeks.

Khalil, in the homeland's soil is a testimony:

glory and pride endure in your homeland.

    تَجد أَثرَ الأَفراخِ يا أَيُّها النِسرُ

    Let inspiration's eye roam through its open spaces;

you will find the fledglings' traces, O eagle.

They are lions, but silence has barred their roar,

so tears streamed from their eyes, and no roar was theirs.

Even if their spirits have turned aside from a cherished wish,

yet immortalizing glory and renown have not turned aside.

This is your homeland, Khalil, for she is

your first wife, should Egypt boast.

For with her water you nourished your fresh verse,

and in her garden your maiden poem grew.

Here beneath these cedars, beneath their majesty,

and beneath boughs that time has spewed forth,

you bowed, humble of heart, in the freshness of youth,

communing with the prophets' panting breath, after they had passed.

How often you stood in Baalbek,

watching the full moon's course, the bright stars following it,

like a procession of jinn emerging from the sky

to witness death's ruins, itself filled with dread.

Does not Baalbek's splendor, today as yesterday,

crown her, with splendor in every ruin?

Has she not remained a flower at glory's breast,

which history kisses, while she is its dawn?

For those ruins are nothing but events

inscribed by mystery upon the brow of days.

And the black dust clouds along her flanks

are but the ages' lessons, uttered by the walls.

Come, shake the days off her with a thought

that is light from prophecy's oil, and is poetry,

to reveal her Jupiter, for he crouches

like Nero, but with no treachery in his breast.

And how many a pause in Zahle's environs brought forth

for you verse surpassing diamonds and gold.

You scatter it in the vineyard at times, and at others

over the valley's hills, strewn far and wide.

And in the land of Egypt, how often you remembered Zahle,

so that land made you weep for her Berdawni,

back when you were with a little, pampered companion,

    whose beautiful countenance the full moon envies;

when you were a child, and your beloved a little girl,

love around you both, and a bond between you,

and the fragrant scent of Mandali aloeswood

wafted along the beautiful river's bank.

For Zahle still remains, and so does her river:

that is the valley, and that is the river.

So sing as you sang in love's predawn hour,

for part of yesterday's memories lies in Zahle.
