At that he sat up with a start and made ready

to commune with his chaste love.

And the willows' rustling whispers in the

    river, hushed words about life.

    فَالقوى لَن تَعودَ بَعدَ إِلَيّا

    He said, “Listen to me: I am dying;

for strength will never again return to me.

I walk swiftly toward the tomb,

for my torment rages in my lungs.

What good do you hope for, my bride,

from weeping that no longer helps at all?

What good, when death is weaving my robe

with threads of darkness from my eyes?

Go back, go back, for the memory of my love

and of my nights has become a burden to me.

Go back: I have wasted away, and now

    only the worms desire me.

    فَاِسأَليها غَداً زَلالاً شَهِيّا

    On the banks of the happy Nile there are waters;

so ask them tomorrow for water, pure and sweet.

And with it regain love and youth:

your sweet Nile is not my Bardawni.

And if ever you pass beneath the palms of the

river one day, where we smiled so long,

where we used to build palaces of dreams,

where we used to harvest dewy youth,

where we used to teach the heart a lesson,

and the palms would learn it from my lips,

so beware of pausing there, lest

you hear news of my death from the mouth of the palms.”
