لَمnot يَزَلceased يَستَمِرُّcontinues فيin خَفَقانِهits beating
A span of darkness has passed, and my heart
Wings of darkness passed, and my heart
still goes on beating.
Kept on throbbing steadily.
وَهفاand fluttered away النَومُsleep عَنfrom جُفونيmy eyelids فَروحيso my soul
فيin وُجودٍan existence ضَلَّstrayed الهدىguidance عَنfrom مَكانهits place
And sleep has fluttered from my eyelids; so my soul
Sleep forsook my eyelids, so my soul
dwells in a world where guidance has strayed from its place.
Exists confused, losing its way.
أَناI فيin مُخدعٍa bedchamber تَكادُalmost لَآهاat my sighs (first part)

تيending of 'my sighs' تَسيلُflow الدُموعُthe tears منfrom جدرانِهits walls
I am in a bedchamber that, at my sighs, almost
I am in a narrow, gloomy closet,
sheds tears from its walls.
Whose walls are soaked with my tears and sighs.
ضَيِّقٍnarrow مُظلِمٍdark فَلَوso if أَقبَلَcame النوthe light (first part)

رُending of 'light' إِلَيهِto it لخافَit would fear لَونَthe color دهانِهits paint
Narrow and dark—if light should come
Were light to enter it, it would fear
into it, it would fear the color of its paint.
The color of its paint.

فَإِخالُso I imagine الجَحيمَhell فيin لَمَعانِهits gleaming
And before me the lamp shines with light,
Before me the lantern glows,
so I imagine hell in its gleam.
Though hellish is its gleam.
وَأَراهُand I see it يسآلنيasks me عَنabout شُجونيmy sorrows

لَوif حباهُhad granted it الإِلهُGod نطقَthe speech of لِسانِهits tongue
And I see it asking me about my sorrows,
I see it asking about my sorrows—
if God had given its tongue the power of speech.
If God had granted speech to its tongue!

كَدَبيبِlike the stirring of البُركانِthe volcano فيin هَيَجانِهits fury
The heart feels a stirring in my blood,
My heart feels a throbbing in my blood
like a volcano's stirring in its fury.
Like the boiling of a volcano in eruption.

And I see a cigarette between my two fingers;
And I see between my fingers a coil
our lives dissolve like its smoke.
Of our vanishing lifetimes like smoke.

I am wakeful in my melancholy, while my beloved
Sleepless am I in my gloom while my beloved
sleeps in peace, oblivious to his sorrows.
Sleeps in peace, not minding my misery.

For slumber's fingertips pour out magic
The wings of slumber shed their charm
and dissolve dreams in his eyelids.
And melt dreams on the eyelids.

Night is half spent—why does my heart commune
Midnight impartially hears my heart
with its dwellers' love in the stillness of darkness?
Complaining in the stillness of darkness.

A fit of madness has touched it; were it not for
Madness has touched it, else but for
my ribs, it would have flown from its body.
My ribs, it would have burst out of my body.

I hear the night singing in the sky,
I hear the night singing in space
and the rustle of leaves is among its melodies.
And the rustling of leaves making its melodies—
تِلكَthat أُنشودَةُthe song of الحَياةِlife يُغَنّيsings

That is the song of life, sung
That is the song of life the night sings
by the tongue of darkness upon its lutes.
Through the tongue of darkness on its branches.

And I see night's darkness as Iblis;
I see the darkness of black night like an army,
the stars of the sky are among his helpers.
The stars in space its aides.

A procession of jinn brides walks
A procession of jinn brides walking
to meet Satan in his hall.
To meet Satan in his hall.

They say whatever he and his passion dictate,

However his fingers and melodies fancy.

When his soul called for the mercy of love,
passion answered his heart's call.”
Desire responded to the call of his soul.

Oh, but if they knew all the things
the heart has cast into its secrecy;
The heart has hidden in its closets!

If they but knew what a lover who takes

Refuge in Lebanon suffers!

if only they knew that in nature there is justice
If they realized that nature is just
whose scales injustice has shorn of both pans,
And injustice has tilted its scales!

they would permit his unbelief and deem it lawful
They would have permitted his blasphemy
for the sorrowful one to remain in his unbelief.
And sanctioned the sorrowing blasphemer to stay in his blasphemy.
رَبِّmy Lord عَفواًpardon لَقَدindeed فَقَدتُI have lost شُعوريmy senses

My Lord, pardon me; I have lost my senses,
Lord, forgive me! I have lost my senses
for my senses wander in their bewilderment.
So my feelings roam about confused.

Be compassionate toward me, and have mercy on my heart,
Be gentle with me and have mercy on my heart
for You see it has strayed from its faith.
When you see it has strayed from faith.

Indeed, my heart is a refuge for every torment
My heart is a harbor for every torment.
that suffering has lodged there without its permission.
Grief has lodged in it without even asking leave.

So it is as though I came into being in the universe only
So it's as though I was created in the universe only
to drink the cup from the hands of its devil.
To drink from the devil's cup.

My friend, if you want to know my heart,
then my brow will make it plain to you.
My forehead weeps to make it plain.

The heart has drawn its image there—look:
The heart outlined its phantom there, so look!
a book is known by its title.
They know a book by its title.

O my friend, look at the garden of my life,
My friend, look at the garden of my life.
how withering has crept into its chrysanthemums.
See how decline has crept into its vines.

For my youth has been laid waste by vicissitudes
My youth was worn down by hardships
that robbed it of the freshness of its prime.
That stripped it of its freshness and prime.

In my solitude, I have come to address Musset,
In my solitude I talk to a reed flute,
sipping, in the darkness, the magic of his eloquence.
Rhapsodizing in the dark the magic of its words.

He was like me; then the grave concealed
He was like me, but the grave took him
his wasted body, shortly before its time.
Before his time, his body worn out and sickly.

O poet of tears, is there any escape from tears
Poet of tears, is there any escape from tears
in a world whose pools include the eye?
In an existence I'm cursed with from its treachery?

The universe has filled my life with torment,
Did the universe fill my life with torment?
and so it has yearned for its shrouds.
Is that why it yearned for its own winding sheets?
