Would that he who created life beautiful
Would that He who created life beautiful
had not drawn veils over her beauty.
Had not let down curtains over its beauty.

Rather, would that he had taken reason away, so that no
Or would that He had stripped away our reason, so there would not be
one could console himself with hope of attaining her.
Anyone deluding themselves with the hope of possessing it.
لِلَّهِby God كَمتُغريhow she tempts الفَتىthe youth بِوِصالِهاwith union with her
وَتَضُنُّand she begrudges حَتّىeven فيin الكَرىsleep بِوِصالِهاunion with her
By God, how she tempts the youth with union with her,
By God, how it tempts the youth with its union,
yet begrudges him union even in sleep.
Yet withholds that union, even in slumber.

She draws him near her doors with her right hand,
She draws him near her gates with her right hand,
and turns him from her chamber with her left.
And repels him from her chamber with her left.
كَمhow often قُلتُI said هَذاthis الأَمرُmatter بَعضُpart of صَوابِهاher rightness

فَوَجَدتُهُthen I found it بِالخَبَرِthrough experience بَعضَpart of مَحالِهاher absurdities
How often I said, 'This matter is part of her wisdom,'
How often I said, "This matter is part of her truth,"
then found through experience that it was one of her absurdities.
Only to find it, through experience, part of her absurdity.
وَلَكَمand how often خُدِعتُI was deceived بِئالِهاby her mirage وَذَمَمتُهُand I condemned it
وَرَجِعتُand I returned أَظمَأَmost thirsty ماas أَكونُI could be لِئالِهاfor her mirage
And how often her mirage deceived me, and I condemned it,
And how often I was deceived by her mirage and condemned it,
yet returned as thirsty as I could be for her mirage.
Only to return, thirstier than ever for that very mirage.
قَدindeed كُنتُI had been أَحسَبُنيthinking myself أَمِنتُsafe from ضَلالَهاher deception
فَإِذاthen behold الَّذيwhat خَمَّنتُI supposed كُلُّall of ضَلالِهاher deception
I had thought myself safe from her deception,
I used to think I was safe from her error,
and behold, what I had supposed was all her deception.
But behold, what I surmised was the very essence of her error.
إِنَّindeed النُفوسَsouls تَغُرُّهاdeceive them آمالُهاtheir hopes

وَتَظَلُّand remain عاكِفَةًdevoted عَلىto آمالِهاtheir hopes
Souls are deceived by their hopes,
Verily, souls are beguiled by their own hopes,
and remain devoted to their hopes.
And remain devotedly attached to those hopes.
ذَهَبَdeparted الصِباyouth وَأَناwhile I أُعالِجُgrappled with سِرَّهاher secret

Youth passed while I grappled with her secret,
Youth has passed while I grapple with her secret,
bewildered by her essence and her end,
Bewildered by her essence and her ultimate end.
حَتّىuntil رَأَيتُI saw الشَمسَthe sun تُلقيcasting نورَهاher light

until I saw the sun cast her light
Until I saw the sun casting its light
upon the earth, over its plains, with her cords;
Upon the earth, over its plains, with its tethering rays.
وَرَأَيتُand I saw أَحقَرَthe humblest ماwhat بَناهُbuilt it عَنكَبٌa spider
مُتَلَفِّفاًwrapped وَمُطَوَّقاًand encircled بِحِبالِهاin her cords
and saw the humblest thing a spider had built
And I saw the humblest web a spider ever spun
wrapped and encircled in her cords,
Enwrapped and encircled by those very rays.

الشامِخاتِtowering عَلىupon الذَرىthe peaks بِقِلالِهاwith their summits
like palaces whose domes rise high,
Resembling lofty palaces with their domes,
towering with their summits upon the peaks.
Towering upon the peaks with their pinnacles.
فَعَلِمتُthen I knew أَنَّthat النَفسَthe soul تَخطُرُwalks proudly فيin الحِلىjewels

Then I knew that the soul parading in jewels
Then I knew that the soul strutting in ornaments
and brocade is like the soul in its rags.
And brocade is like the soul in its rags.
لَيسَتis not حَياتَكَyour life غَيرَother than ماwhat صَوَّرتَهاyou imagined her to be
أَنتَyou are الحَياةُlife بِصَمتِهاin her silence وَمَقالِهاand her speech
Your life is only what you have imagined her to be;
Your life is nothing other than what you have imagined it;
you are life, in her silence and her speech.
You are life, in its silence and its speech.
وَلَقَدand indeed نَظَرتُI looked إِلىat الحَمائِمِthe doves فيon الرُبىthe hills

And I looked upon the doves on the hills,
I gazed at the doves upon the hills,
and marveled at humankind's condition and theirs.
And marveled at the state of mankind compared to theirs.
لِلشَوكِthe thorns have حَظُّthe share of الوَردِthe roses مِنin تَغريدِهاtheir song
وَسَيكَهُand its partner (apparently) مِنfrom بَعدُafterward فيin إِعوالِهاtheir wailing
The thorns have the roses' share of their song,
The thorns share the rose's portion of her song,
and later share with them in their wailing.
Just as the thicket shares later in her lamentation.
تَشدوthey sing وَصائِدُهاwhile their hunter يَمُدُّholds out لَهاto them الرَدىdeath
فَاِعجَبso marvel لِمُحسِنَةٍat a benefactress إِلىto مُغتالِهاher killer
They sing while their hunter holds out death to them;
She sings while her hunter extends death toward her;
so marvel at one who is kind to her killer.
Marvel at one who shows kindness to her assassin!
فَغَبَطتُهاso I envied them فيfor أَمنِهاtheir safety وَسَلامِهاand their peace
وَوَدَدتُand I wished لَوif only أُعطيتُI were given راحَةَthe peace of بالِهاtheir mind
So I envied their safety and peace,
I envied her for her security and peace,
and wished I might be granted their peace of mind.
And wished that I had been granted her peace of mind.
وَجَعَلتُand I made مَذهَبَهاtheir way مِنَفسِيَfor myself (apparently) مَذهَباًa way

And I made their way my own way,
I made her philosophy a path for my own soul,
and wove my character upon their loom.
And wove my character upon her loom.
مَنwhoever لَجَّpersisted فيin ضَيميwronging me تَرَكتُI left سَمائَهُhis sky

Whoever persisted in wronging me, I left his sky
Whoever persists in wronging me, I leave his sky
to weep for me with its sun and crescent.
To weep over me with its sun and its crescent.
وَهَجَرتُand I abandoned رَوضَتُهُhis garden فَأَصبَحَso became وَردُهاits roses
لِليَأسِin despair كَالأَشواكِlike thorns فيin أَدغالِهاits thickets
And I abandoned his garden, so its roses became,
I abandoned his garden, so its roses became,
in despair, like thorns within its thickets.
Through despair, like thorns in the thickets.
وَزَجَرتُand I forbade نَفسيmy soul أَنto تَميلَturn كَنَفسِهِlike his soul

And I forbade my soul to turn, like his,
And I forbade my soul from inclining, as his did,
from the world's abundance toward its mire.
Away from the world's nectar toward its mire.

Forgetting the offender who wronged you is a virtue,
Forgetting the abusive offender is a virtue,
and the quenching of a fire he labored to ignite.
And an extinguishing of the fire he strove to ignite.
فَاِربَءso rise above بِنَفسِكَyourself وَالحَياةُwhile life قَصيرَةٌis short

أَنthat تَجعَلَyou make الأَضغانَgrudges مِنamong أَحمالِهاits burdens
So rise above—life is short—
So elevate yourself—for life is short—
making grudges part of its burdens.
From making grudges one of its burdens.
زَمَنَO time of الشَبابِyouth رَحَلتَyou departed غَيرَwithout being مُذَمَّمٍblamed

O time of youth, you departed without reproach,
O time of youth, you departed without blame,
and left my distraught heart to regrets.
Yet left my ravished heart to its regrets.

Their scorpions crept toward it, assailing it,
Its scorpions crawled toward it, stinging,
and cast its remnants to their vipers.
And cast its remnants to the vipers.

Of its pleasures nothing remained but visions,
Nothing remains of its pleasures but visions,
and of ardent love, only the phantom of its image;
Nor of passion but the phantom of its memory.

and of the cups, only the echo of their chimes,
Nor of the cups but the echo of their ringing,
and of wine, only its hangover and delirium.
Nor of the wine but its hangover and ruin.

O garden, cut short before it could bear fruit,
O paradise, snatched away before its fruition,
and delight stripped of its robe!
O delight, stripped bare of its raiment.

Did anything mar it except its passing?
Did any flaw mar it other than its impermanence?
And fate bears the blame for its passing.
And the fault for its fading lies with the Fates.

And a lovely woman, whose face held the morning's radiance,
And a beauty, in whose face is the morning's glow,
and whose words held enchantment and tawny wine,
And in whose words are magic and wine.

said, 'Do those far from home forget their homeland?'
She asked, "Do the exiles forget their homelands?"
Nothing stirred my heart's sorrow but her question.
Nothing stirred the heart's sorrow like her question.

Of all the earth, Syria is the dearest region
The land is Syria—its regions are most beloved to me,
to me, and Lebanon its most treasured mountains.
And Lebanon is the dearest of its mountains.

Of all people, her kindred are most honored by me;
And the people—the most honored to me are her kin;
my soul is a ransom for her people and her kin.
My soul is a ransom for her tribe and her folk.

Of all the stars, the brightest are those on her horizon;
And the stars—the brightest are those in her horizon;
there is no true majesty but hers.
True majesty is nothing other than her majesty.

And the rain I love most is what falls upon her soil,
And the dearest rain is that which falls upon her soil,
even the showers weeping over her ruins.
Even the showers weeping over her ruins.

The mirth of joyous youth is in her predawn hours,
The joy of gleeful youth is in her dawns,
and the wishes of lovesick youth in her evenings.
And the desires of lovesick youth are in her dusks.

I can surely tell her breeze from any other,
I distinguish her breeze from all others
by the wafts of fragrance in its trailing skirts.
By the fragrant scents wafting in its trails.

Those homes—how often I strolled through their courtyards,
Those dwellings—how often I strolled in their courtyards,
in their lion's shelter and their gazelle's tenderness.
In the shadow of her lions and the grace of her gazelles.

I sang along with her birds, and kept vigil with
her moons, and danced with her waterfall;
Her moons, and danced with her waterfalls.

and bowed before inspiration with her willows,
I bowed to inspiration alongside her willows,
and laughed at dreams with her broom shrubs.
And laughed at dreams alongside her broom flowers.

And I filled my mind with her elders' talk,
I filled my mind with the wisdom of her elders,
and drew my poetry from her children's babble.
And drew my poetry from the chatter of her children.

My eye longs, before death closes it,
My eye longs, before death closes it forever,
to be lined, even with her sand as kohl.
To be soothed, if only by the kohl of her sands.

The years passed me by, each following another,
The years have passed me, following one another
leaping like sandgrouse, racing toward their appointed ends;
Like flocking sandgrouse leaping toward their destined ends.

Visions of beauty have come in succession, yet nothing remains
in my thoughts except her likeness.
In my mind of them all, save for her image alone.
