The starry night heard a moan

As it enveloped the white city.

So it bent over her like one stealing a

Whisper, prolonging silence and attentive listening.

Then it saw her people asleep, like the People of the

Cave: no clamor and no din.

And it saw the dam behind her, solidly

Built, and the water resembling the desert.

That moan came from a stone in the

Dam, complaining of the blind decrees of fate.

“What worth,” it says, “is mine in the universe?

I am nothing in it, nor am I dust.

I am not marble, to be carved into a

Statue, nor a rock that might become a building.

I am not earth, to sip the water,

Or water, to irrigate the lush gardens.

Nor am I a pearl for which a fair maiden

    Vies with a lovely beauty.

    لَستُ خالاً أَو وَجنَةً حَمراءَ

    I am neither a tear nor an eye;

I am not a beauty spot or a rosy cheek.

    I am a dust-gray stone, and a lowly one:

No beauty, no wisdom, no power.

So let me leave this existence and depart

In peace; I have come to hate staying.”

And it fell from its place, complaining of the

Earth, the meteors, the darkness, and the sky.

Dawn opened its eyelid, and behold, the

Flood was engulfing the white city.
