ذَهَبَhas gone الرَبيعُspring فَفيso in الخَمائِلِthe groves وَحشَةٌloneliness
مِثلُlike الكَآبَةِthe melancholy مِنfrom فِراقِكَparting from you فيناwithin us
Spring has gone, leaving loneliness in the groves,
Spring has departed, leaving the meadows desolate
Spring has departed, leaving desolation in the groves
Like the melancholy your parting leaves within us.
Like the melancholy of being apart from you
Like the melancholy that dwells in us from your absence.
لَوif دُمتَyou remained لَمnot تَحزَنgrieve عَلَيهِover it قُلوبُناour hearts
وَلَئِنand even if أَضَعناwe lost الوَردَthe roses وَالنَسريناand the eglantine
Had you stayed, our hearts would not have mourned it,
Had you stayed, our hearts would not have grieved
Had you remained, our hearts would not have grieved for it,
And though we lost the roses and eglantine,
Although we lost the roses and jasmine
Even if we had lost the roses and the eglantine.
فَلَقَدfor indeed وَجَدناwe found فيin خِلالِكَyour virtues زَهرَهُits blossoms
المُفتَرَّsmiling open وَبِالماءِand with the water الَّذيthat يَرويناquenches our thirst
For in your virtues we found its blossoms,
For we found in you blossoms
For we have found in your nature spring's very blossom,
Smiling open, along with the water that quenches our thirst,
Of joy and water to quench our thirst
Brightly smiling, and the fresh water that quenches us,
وَنَسيمَهُand its breeze الساريwafting كَأَنفاسِlike breaths of الرِضىcontentment
وَشُعاعَهُand its radiance يَغشىoverspreads المُروجَthe meadows فُتوناenchantingly
And its wafting breeze, like breaths of contentment,
Your gentle breeze like breaths of contentment
And its wandering breeze, like breaths of contentment,
And its radiance bathing the meadows in enchantment.
Your light enveloping the meadows, alluring us
And its radiance that clothes the meadows in enchantment.
جَزَتِyou surpassed المَحاسِنَthe beauties فيin الرَبيعِspring وَفُقتَهُand you surpassed it
إِذfor لَيسَthere is no عِندَكَwith you عَوسَجٌthornbush يُدميناmakes us bleed
You surpassed spring's beauties and outdid it,
The beauties of spring paled next to your grace
You encompassed the beauties of spring and surpassed it,
For with you there is no thornbush to make us bleed.
For you have no thorns to prick us
For you possess no thorns to make us bleed.
ياO أَشهُراًmonths مَرَّتpassed سِراعاًswiftly كَالمُنىlike wishes
لَوif أَستَطيعُI could جَعَلتُكُنَّI would make you سِنيناyears
O months that passed swiftly, like wishes,
Oh months that sped by so swiftly like wishes
O months that passed as swiftly as wishes,
If I could, I would turn you into years,
If only I could make you into years
If I were able, I would have made you into years.
وَأَمَرتُand I would command أَنto يَقِفَstop الزَمانُTime عَنِfrom السُرىnight travel
كَيلاso that not نَمُرَّwe pass بِساعَةٍthrough an hour تُبكيناmakes us weep
And command Time to halt its nightly journey,
And stop time in its tracks
And I would have commanded time to halt its journey,
Lest we pass through an hour that makes us weep,
Lest we pass an hour that makes us weep
So we might never reach an hour that brings us tears.
وَنَمُدُّand we stretch out أَيدِيَناour hands فَتَرجِعُso they return لَمnot تُصبِachieve their aim
وَتَعودَand they return فَوقَover قُلوبِناour hearts أَيديناour hands
And stretch out our hands, only for them to return empty,
And reach out our hands, only to have them return
We stretch out our hands, but they return grasping nothing,
And our hands return to rest upon our hearts,
Placed again over our hearts
And back upon our hearts our hands descend,
خَوفاًfor fear عَلَيهاfor them أَنthat تَساقَطَthey fall apart حَسرَةًwith grief
أَوor أَنthat تَفيضَthey overflow لَواعِجاًburning anguish وَشُجوناand sorrows
Fearing for them, lest they fall to pieces with grief,
Fearing they may fall in sorrow
In fear that they might shatter from regret,
Or overflow with burning anguish and sorrow.
Or overflow with anguish and grief
Or overflow with burning anguish and sorrows.
قَدindeed كُنتِyou were خِلتُI thought الدَهرَTime حَطَّمَshattered قَوسَهُits bow
حَتّىuntil رَأَيتُI saw سِهامَهُits arrows تُصميناstrike us dead
While you were here, I thought Time had shattered its bow,
You had been the antidote in life that broke its bow
I had thought that Fate had shattered its bow,
Until I saw its arrows strike us down.
Until we saw its arrows pierce us
Until I saw its arrows striking us down.
فَكَأَنَّماso, as though قَدindeed سائَهُdispleased it وَأَمَضَّهُand pained it deeply
أَنّاthat we تَمَتَّعناwe enjoyed بِقُربِكِin your nearness حيناfor a while
As though it had been displeased and deeply pained
It's as if it regained its strength and sharpness
As if it were displeased and deeply pained
That we enjoyed being near you for a while.
When your company was ours for a while
That we enjoyed your nearness for a while.
