Shortly before afternoon, there was a carriage

running with the travelers it carried,

between low ground and a height

lofty, and between level ground and rugged terrain.

As it traveled, its wheels traced

lines upon the earth, without its knowing.

It wrote without ink; yet hard it is for

pens to write a single letter without any ink.

Ever roaming the earth, it never ceased

to go like a bird from nest to nest.

It refused and disdained to be beset

by fatigue, or to complain except of urging cries.

Among its passengers it carried every young man

of handsome appearance, and everyone of standing.

They talked: one about a hope

to come, another about his past life.

    They talked, while it traveled

with the company, turning aside for nothing.

It seemed to have set itself a deadline

to meet the sun in a secluded chamber.

Until, when it reached an open plain

    stretching far, its edges yellow,

one of its wheels fell off

and shattered into pieces upon the rocks.

The passengers feared ill fortune and grew agitated

by the harm that had befallen them.

They dispersed after being gathered together,

scattered—how often order turns to dispersal!

The sun's rays had streamed forth,

clothing the earth's skin in gold dust.

The horizon was red, as though it harbored

anger against the days and time.

    The people's hearts were trembling

with anxiety, as though they stood on live coals.

Among the company was a maiden with budding

    breasts, endowed with alluring beauty.

She wept as the despairing weep—and how

freely flow a virgin maiden's tears!

She stood while the sun on the horizon was setting,

scattering aloft, like roses, like raindrops.

Two suns—had there not been between them

a bond, they would not have wept at parting.

She turned her eyes in panic,

like a gazelle looking back in fright.

And suddenly a young man, his countenance like dawn—

    indeed, perhaps surpassing dawn—

came to her, saying: How strange!

Why these tears, sister of the full moon?

    ما أَوحَشَ الظَلماءِ في القَفرِ

    She said: I fear night will descend upon me;

how desolate is darkness in the wilderness!

What I fear most is the shedding of my blood

    by the sinful, treacherous thief,

Henry the accursed—and that young man Henry

is none but the son of Death's mother, if you knew.

He lies in wait on the road, and none passes him—

not a foot, nor the breezes as they glide.

Alas for my misery! The road to

my home passes the admirer of wickedness.

I know that my foot is only

    hurrying me toward the grave.

The youth said: Away with that! Your fear will not

help you at all, lady of purity.

So take courage, and rely on me,

for I am the one who will protect you from Henry.

She said: I fear the treacherous man might harm

    this tender, radiant youth.

He answered her: Do not panic, and trust

that I am confident of victory.

It resumed, as though no defect had beset it,

the ship of the land cleaving the wilderness.

The night was murky, surging as

the soul's sorrows surge within the breast.

    It seemed like hopes, boundless,

and like the sea at flood and ebb.

    Its stars, shining forth, seemed

tears of coquetry and pure white pearls.

The full moon shone forth despite a towering height

that had tried to enfold it like a secret.

It cast its rays, and they took on

the hue of silver and the pearls of a mouth.

It seemed a beautiful woman emerging

from her chamber, or a palace figurine.

It seemed the wing of darkness had committed

a sin, and the full moon came as an apology.

Paths became clear to the mount; they had

been like the sea's hidden mysteries.

So it came to resemble an arrow let fly,

in its running, and a phantom traveling by night.

The company, in diversion and delight,

recited to one another the finest poetry.

Until, when it reached a bend,

it stopped like someone waking from drunkenness.

    وَمَشَت وَأَعقَبَها عَلى الأَثرِ

    Then Lisa alighted with her companion;

she walked, and he followed in her tracks.

    And that mount resumed what

had been its advances and retreats.

    ما ثَمَّ مِن تيه وَلا كِبرِ

    The beautiful woman walked with her head lowered;

there was no conceit or pride.

How could she be proud, when upon her had settled

sorrow—and some sorrow is like a heavy load?

She had drunk no wine, yet you would think her,

from what afflicted her, drunk with wine.

In a forest resembling her tresses

in its color, its folding and unfurling,

its treetops were so dense they opened

only for the passage of wolf and leopard.

Hushed like a night of deepest darkness—

though many a night is radiant and guileless.

The shining moon had attempted within it

what faith has attempted amid unbelief.

It bent tenderly over a gazelle and a lion—

have you seen two secrets in one breast?

A falcon and a gray dove—and it is strange

that the dove should seek refuge with the falcon!

This—and stranger still, she remained unharmed

by him, despite the treachery within him.

She kept walking, and he kept following her,

betraying no trace of sin or guilt.

The road was long, and long was their journey,

yet the night's lifetime was growing short.

    Until, when morning unveiled itself,

darkness had lifted—it had been like a curtain—

and the forest was about to reveal her

and him, without reserve, to the river,

she looked at him with an eye brimming

with enchantment, and a face overflowing with gladness.

She said to him: Nothing remains of the danger,

the grave danger we feared, nor any ominous sign.

    Look: dawn is about to

erase the light of the shining stars.

I see it creeping into darkness—is

this the creeping of grayness into hair?

And I hear—the birds' voices have risen

among the dunes, the wild lote trees, and the lote trees.

The youth said: Or was I in danger?

She said to him: How strange! Did you not know?

He answered her: No one was in danger

whose companion was the young man Henry.

She recoiled in fright, and he said to her:

Do not panic; listen to a free man.

I have never been an evil man, nor

a man who takes pleasure in evil.

But I am a fate that overtakes

a fate that overtakes the children of time.

Rather, I am a danger to a band

from whom the afflicted are at risk.

They killed my father unjustly, so I killed them

justly; it is enough for me that justice prevail.

There is no peace between me and them,

no peace between cat and mouse.

In death they will see an avenger,

no intercessor in the taking of vengeance.

By God, I shall not forget you, Father,

    ever, nor overlook the blood-debt.

    فَإِلَيكَ ما قَد كانَ مِن أَمري

    She said: You have stirred sorrow in me;

so hear what has happened to me.

The king sent for my father, and off he went,

and my brother with him, straight to the palace.

And there was my father, held fast in the grave,

and my brother in the fetters of captivity.

O my two arms, you have been severed—and the hand

of treacherous time is more deserving of severing.

My fang and my claw, after you both I was left

    alone, without fang or claw.

Alas for time's injustice toward us,

and woe from it to everyone deceived!

It is as though we and Death, grazing in

our souls, were a pasture and its feasting grazer.

When she finished, there he was, astonished,

bewildered, as though held by a spell.

    كُلُّ البَلاغَةِ تَحتَ ذا الحَصرِ

    He wanted to speak, but muteness overtook him;

all eloquence lies beneath such tongue-tied silence.

And likewise the graceful maiden was dazed

by an inclination toward this guileless youth.

She said: My brother, by God! And she drew near,

gazing at him with the eyes of a pale gazelle.

And suddenly he cast off his cloak,

and with it concealment departed, leaving him revealed.

She cried: My brother Victor! Oh, my joy!

My soul, my brother, my heart's blood, my treasure!

    إِنَّ البُخارَ نَتيجَةُ الحَرِّ

    They embraced, and the youth wept with joy;

indeed, vapor is the product of heat.

Her tears fell upon her cheek

    like raindrops upon fresh blossoms.

Tell those who complain of their time:

There is no escaping sweetness and bitterness.

Be patient when a great calamity strikes you,

    for hardship ends in ease.
