Say to the doves along the valley's banks:

O, would that you were upon my heart's inmost folds,

That you might see how its dreams were scattered,

And sorrows raced through it like steeds in pursuit.

Hopes once shone upon its sides,

Then faded, and it exchanged their embers for ashes.

Gladden it; perhaps its yearning will ease:

The sorrowful have the greatest claim to joy.

Youth has gone, and you remain amid regrets for it.

Would that grief, like youth, were bound to end!

Youth itself is wealth; and when it passes,

And you remain, your poverty is ever plain.

I now gaze upon life, yet see nothing

    But darkness clasping darkness.

I greet the morning, but scarcely have I gazed

Before its radiance turns to spears.

And when the stars face me, they squint,

As though they were the eyes of the envious.

No memory, when it passes through

My heart, brings rest, save the valley's image.

Does the sun not still dye its face

With yellow wars-dye at times, and with mulberry red?

Does there not still melt within its waves

The gold of evening and the silver of early mornings?

Ah, my anguish when companions come to the water at dusk,

And I remember I am not among those who come!

And when the doves sing and its waves clap,

That I do not applaud the singing doves!

And when the palms' shadows stretch long,

That they are not my shelter and my pillow!

And when the stars stud its horizons,

That my sleepless hours are not spent watching them!

    إِنَّ الهَوى لِلمَرءِ كَالميلادِ

    I tasted love and knew it upon its bank;

Love is to a person like being born.

Hearts do not grasp the secret of their being

Until love courses through those hearts.

    لَم نَدرِ ما في العَيشِ مِن أَمجادِ

    As long as I have lived, love has not touched your breast;

We have not known what glories life contains.

The eye cannot see gardens and their jewels

Except by the guiding light of morning.

Two homelands draw my deepest longing:

Egypt, which I have loved, and my own country.

The homelands of spirits stand higher in esteem

Within the soul than the homelands of bodies.

My care to cherish al-Kinana exceeds

A prisoner's care for his remaining provisions.

O land of beauty, hidden and revealed,

And of art, both new and ancestral!

The nations displayed their pageants, yet I found

Only in Egypt the freshness of the ages.

How many lie buried in its soil, yet remain

As though alive, bearing love and grudges!

And many a lofty monument inspires in those who visit it

From every land the awe of worshippers.

The ancestors lived and founded all they founded,

And today they rise again in their descendants,

Who lavish their bounty upon the gifted,

Like dawn spreading over towering mountains.

O rising sons of Egypt, a greeting

As warm as your love—if I do not say as mine—

From a poet enamored of you and your land,

Who always befriends and opposes for your sake.

Honor is yours if you honor journalism's elder,

The brightest star in the sky of Arabic.

Youth draped al-Kinana in a sumptuous cloak,

Like spring upon hills and hollows.

    His light kept piercing ignorance,

Until its lingering night grew shorter,

Through a newspaper whose black print is light to the eyes,

And whose whiteness comes from gleaming necks.

A fountain of knowledge, a temple of wisdom,

A vessel of letters, a treasure of guidance.

I have seen the most precious talents and minds

Dwelling in palaces of parchment and ink.

The memory of the striver is truly everlasting,

While the master of sword and armies passes away.

Without the titans of genius, there would not have spread

Across the earth the fame of mighty commanders.

No nation has smoothed the paths to greatness

Except through the strength of a reformer or a guide.

Sarruf, mankind asks you; tell them:

How many hours of martyrdom has your life held?

Despair rose against you from its depths,

And you repelled its bird, your heart serene.

And you went on probing life and its secret

In every sentient being and every lifeless thing,

Until you almost felt the whispering of hopes

And discerned how many opposites dwell in the soul.

You are the one whose resolves bore him through the night,

While the road was obscure to pathfinders,

And night was a host of perils over its ravines,

And terror stood as warriors upon the heights.

It was you who unfurled the banner of truth

At a time when knowledge was akin to unbelief,

And the Easterner's mind, through his delusions,

Was like an eagle in nooses and chains.

Nations suffer, when they suffer, through their ignorance,

And grow mighty, when they do, through individuals:

Those who keep vigil through the night like its stars,

    As though they lay in wait for Time;

Who give their lives and ask for nothing,

Their souls clad in coats of steel.

They lower their wings, yet beneath their cloaks

Lie kings' ambitions and the onslaught of defiant giants.

    ما الناسُ في الدُنيا سِوى الآحادِ

    Time is theirs, its past and its present;

Humanity in this world is but its outstanding few.

Mankind, through all its different ages,

Has given the learned the foremost seat in the gathering.

The celebration is not of fifty years, but of intellect

And its arts, and the blazing mind.

A celebration of sound judgment and all journalism,

In Egypt, in Beirut, in Baghdad.

Life is not reckoned in years; how many an age

Is like a blank in the lifetime of the ordinary crowd!

Without noble deeds, a lifetime is empty,

Like a wasteland where the camel-driver's toil drags on.

Lives other than the genius's we measure—

They are measured by allotted terms and spans of time.
