ياO نَفسُsoul هَذاthis مَنزِلُthe home of الأَحبابِloved ones
فَاِنسَيso forget عَذابَكِyour torment فيin النَوىseparation وَعَذابيand my torment
O soul, this is the home of loved ones.
O my soul, this is the abode of loved ones
O Soul, this is the abode of the beloveds,
So forget your torment in separation, and mine.
So forget your torment in yearning, and my torment
So forget your torment in separation, and forget mine.
وَتَهَلَّليand brighten كَالفَجرِlike dawn فيin هَذاthis الحِمىsanctuary
وَتَأَلَّقيand sparkle كَالخَمرِlike wine فيin الأَكوابِthe cups
And brighten like dawn in this sanctuary,
And be joyous like the dawn in this fever
And beam with joy like the dawn in this sanctuary,
and sparkle like wine in the cups.
And shine like wine in cups
And sparkle like wine within the goblets.
وَلتَمسَحِand let ... wipe away البُشرىglad tidings دُموعَكِyour tears مِثلَماjust as

And let glad tidings wipe away your tears, just as
And let good tidings wipe your tears
Let glad tidings wipe away your tears, just as
morning wipes dew from the grasses.
As the morning wipes away dew from plants
The morning wipes the dew from the grass.
وَاِستَرجِعيand regain عَهدَthe days of البَشاشَةِcheerfulness وَالرِضىand contentment
فَالدَهرُfor time عادَhas returned تَضاحُكاًlaughter وَتَصابيand youthful play
And regain the days of cheerfulness and contentment,
And regain the era of cheerfulness and contentment
And reclaim the age of cheerfulness and contentment,
for time has returned to laughter and youthful play.
For time has returned, jesting and coquetting
For Fate has returned to laughter and youthful passion.
أَناI بَينَamong أَصحابيmy friends الَّذينَwhom أُحِبُّهُمI love them
ماhow أَجمَلَbeautiful الدُنياthe world مَعَwith الأَصحابِfriends
I am among my friends, whom I love.
I am among my friends whom I love
I am among the companions whom I love;
How beautiful the world is with friends!
How beautiful is life with friends
How beautiful the world is when shared with friends.

I was once like a bird imprisoned in
I used to be like a bird imprisoned
I was like a bird imprisoned in
a cage, and like a star behind mist.
In a cage, and like a star behind clouds
A cage, and like a star obscured by fog.
يَمتَدُّstretches فيin جُنحِthe cover of الظَلامِdarkness تَأَوُّهيmy moaning
وَيَطولُand lingers فيin أُذنِthe ear of الزَمانِtime عِتابيmy reproach
My moaning stretches under the cover of darkness,
Extending its wailing in the wings of darkness
My sighing stretched out into the wings of darkness,
and my reproach lingers in the ear of time.
And my reproach lengthens in the ear of time
And my reproaches grew long in the ear of Time.
وَأَهُزُّand I shake أَقلاميmy pens فَتَرشَحُso they ooze حِدَّةًbitterness

And I shake my pens, so they ooze bitterness
And I shake my pens until they ooze sharpness
I shook my pens, and they bled sharpness
and sorrow, and my writing grows wet with tears.
And sorrow, and my book flows with tears
And sorrow, while my book grew damp with tears.
حَتّىuntil لَقيتَكُمُI met you all فَبِتُّso I became كَأَنَّنيas though I
لِمَسَرَّتيto my delight اِستَرجَعتُI regained عَصرَthe time of شَبابيmy youth
Until I met you, and became as though I
Until I met you, so I spend the night as if
Until I met you, and I became as though
had, to my delight, regained the days of my youth.
For my joy, I regained the prime of my youth
In my joy, I had regained the days of my youth.
لَيسَis not التَعَبُّدُreligious devotion أَنthat تَبيتَyou spend the night عَلىin الطَوىhunger
وَتَروحَand you go about فيin خِرَقٍrags مِنَof الأَثوابِclothing
Devotion is not spending the night hungry
Devotion is not that you spend the night atop mountains
True devotion is not to pass the night in hunger,
and going about in rags of clothing;
And go around in tattered clothes
Nor to wander about in tattered rags.
لَكِنَّهُbut it is إِنقاظُrescuing (apparent misspelling) نَفسِthe soul of مُعَذَّبٍa tormented person
مِنfrom رِبقَةِthe yoke of الآلامِpains وَالأَوصابِand afflictions
rather, it is rescuing a tormented soul
But it is awakening a tortured soul
Rather, it is the rescue of a tormented soul
from the yoke of pain and affliction.
From the shackles of pains and ailments
From the yoke of suffering and maladies.
لَيسَis not التَعَبُّدُreligious devotion عُزلَةًseclusion وَتَنَسُّكاًand asceticism

Devotion is not seclusion and asceticism
Devotion is not isolation and asceticism
Devotion is not seclusion and ascetic rites
in a monastery, or the wilderness, or the forest;
In a monastery, or in the desert, or in the forest
Within a monastery, the wasteland, or the woods.
لَكِنَّهُbut it is ضَبطُrestraining الهَوىdesire فيin عالَمٍa world

rather, it is restraining desire in a world
Rather, it is controlling desire in a world
But it is the mastery of desire in a world
where temptation has many sources,
In which misguidance is the cause of most causes
Where the causes of temptation are abundant,
وَحَبائِلُand the snares of الشَيطانِSatan فيin جَنَباتِهِits reaches

and Satan's snares lie throughout its reaches,
And snares of the devil in its edges
Where the snares of the Devil lie in its every corner,
and wealth there is the greatest of gods.
And money in it is the greatest of lords
And wealth is revered as the greatest of lords.

This is the sound view; any other,
This is the right opinion, and anything else
This is the righteous view; any other,
however sweet it is to people, is unsound.
However it appears good to people, is not right
However sweet it seems to people, is not the truth.
