ياO شاعِرَpoet of الحُسنِbeauty هَذيthis رَوعَةُthe splendor of العيدِthe festival
فَاِستَنجِدِso seek the aid of الوَحيinspiration وَاِهتُفand sing out بِالأَناشيدِwith songs
O poet of beauty, this is the splendor of the festival.
O poet of beauty, here is the splendor of the festival,
So summon inspiration and sing out in songs.
So summon your inspiration and chant the anthems.
هَذاthis النَعيمُthe bliss الَّذيthat كُنتَyou used to تُنشِدُهُseek it
لاdo not تَلهُbe distracted عَنهُfrom it بِشَئيby something غَيرِnot مَوجودِexistent
This is the bliss that you used to seek.
This is the bliss that you have long sought;
Do not be distracted from it by something nonexistent.
Do not be distracted from it by things that do not exist.
مَحاسِنُthe beauties of الصَيفِsummer فيin سَهلa plain وَفيand in جَبَلٍa mountain
وَنَشوَةُand the rapture of الصَيفِsummer حَتّىeven فيin الجَلاميدِthe boulders
Summer’s beauties lie in plain and mountain,
The beauties of summer are in every plain and upon every mountain,
And summer’s rapture even in the boulders.
And the ecstasy of summer stirs even the solid boulders.
وَلَستَand you do not تُبصِرُsee وَجهاًa face غَيرَnot مُؤتَلِقٍradiant
وَلَستَand you do not تَسمَعُhear إِلّاexcept صَوتَthe voice of غِرّيدِa sweet singer
You see no face that is not radiant,
You see no face that is not radiant,
And hear nothing but a sweet singer’s voice.
And you hear nothing but the voice of the warbler.
قُمrise حَدِّثِtell الناسَthe people عَنabout لُبنانَLebanon كَيفَhow نَجاit escaped
مِنَfrom الطُغاةِthe tyrants العُتاةِthe ruthless البيضthe white وَالسودِand the black
Rise, tell the people how Lebanon escaped
Rise and tell the people how Lebanon has escaped
The ruthless tyrants, white and black.
From the insolent tyrants, both white and black;
وَكَيفَand how حَشَّتblazed up دِمَشقُDamascus بَعدَafter مِحنَتِهاher ordeal
وَاِستَرجَعَتand she recovered كُلَّevery مَسلوبplundered thing وَمَفقودِand lost thing
And how Damascus blazed up after her ordeal,
And how Damascus has blossomed after its ordeal,
And recovered all that was plundered and lost.
And reclaimed all that was stolen and lost.
فَاليَومَfor today لاno أَجنَبِيٌّforeigner يَسَتَبِدُّtyrannizes بِناover us
وَيَستَخِفُand makes light بِناof us اِستِخفافَwith the contempt of عِربيدِa drunken bully
For today no foreigner tyrannizes over us
For today no foreigner tyrannizes us,
And treats us with a drunken bully’s contempt.
Nor scorns us with the insolence of a drunkard.
ياO أَرزُcedar صَفِّقclap وَياand O أَبنائُهُits sons اِبتَهِجواrejoice
قَدindeed أَصبَحَhas become السِربُthe flock فيin أَمنٍsafety مِنَfrom السَيِّدِthe master
O cedar, clap; and you, its sons, rejoice!
O Cedars, clap your hands, and O children of the Cedars, rejoice!
The flock is now safe from the master.
The flock is now safe from the master.
ماno بُلبُلٌnightingale كانَwas مَسجوناًimprisoned فَأَطلَقَهُthen set it free
سَحّانُهُits jailer (apparently intended) بَعدَafter تعذيبtorment وَتَنكيدِand distress
No nightingale that was imprisoned, then freed
No nightingale, once imprisoned and then set free
By its jailer after torment and distress,
By its jailer after torture and torment,
فَراحَthen it went يَطويtraversing الفَضاءَthe sky الرَحبَspacious مُنطَلِقاًflying free
إِلىtoward الرُبىthe hills وَالسَواقيand the watercourses وَالأَماليدِand the tender boughs
And sped across the spacious sky, flying free,
Then went traversing the vast expanse in flight,
Toward the hills, the watercourses, and the tender boughs,
To the hills, the streams, and the tender boughs,
إِلىtoward المُروجِthe meadows يُصليpraying فيin مَسارِحِهاtheir open pastures
إِلىtoward الكُرومِthe vineyards يُغنيsinging لِلعَناقيدِto the grape clusters
Toward the meadows, praying in their open pastures,
To the meadows, praying within their open stages,
Toward the vineyards, singing to the grape clusters,
To the vineyards, singing to the clusters—
مِنّيthan me بِأَسعَدَany happier نَفساًin spirit قَدindeed نَزِلَتI have alighted عَلىamong
قَوميmy people الصَناديدِthe valiant أَبناءَsons of الصَناديدِthe valiant
Is happier in spirit than I, now that I have alighted among
Is happier in soul than I, having settled among
My valiant people, sons of valiant men.
My stalwart people, the sons of stalwart ancestors.
سَماءُthe sky of لُبنانَLebanon بِشرٌgladness فيin مَلامِحِمtheir features
وَفَجرُهُand its dawn فيin ثُغورِthe mouths of الخُرَّدِthe bashful maidens الغيدِthe graceful ones
Lebanon’s sky is gladness in their faces,
The sky of Lebanon is a joy reflected in their features,
And its dawn is in the smiles of shy, graceful maidens.
And its dawn shines in the smiles of the graceful maidens.
إِنif تَسكُنواyou inhabit الطَودَthe lofty mountain صارَbecomes الطَودُthe lofty mountain قُبلَتَناour direction of prayer
أَوor تَهبِطواyou descend into البيدَthe deserts لَمnot نَعشَقwe love passionately سِوىexcept البيدِthe deserts
If you dwell on the mountain, the mountain becomes our direction of prayer;
If you dwell on the mountain peak, the peak becomes our sanctuary,
Or if you descend into the deserts, we shall love nothing but the deserts.
And if you descend to the desert, we shall love nothing but the desert.
