O ʿUbayd Allāh, may you ever

    be protected from every plot.

How many a hand, worth many hands,

from a hand of yours, itself worth many hands,

    lures those seeking bounty until

they seek its bounty, as game is lured.

You have lived, all your life, like ʿAbd Allāh,

    and in generosity like Zayd.

Were you to race the wind in glory,

    it would surely seem fettered.

You are Saʿd in noble attainments,

    not Suʿayd—a little Saʿd—among them.

You journeyed until you attained the loftiest

    height of glory, with strength.

Rather, you lowered yourself onto it

from the lofty peaks of Qudayd.

You did not attain it through guile,

no, nor with slow, measured steps.

The earth grew steady through your governance

    there, after swaying.

And your pens are indeed sharper

than the tip of Durayd's spear,

or the tip of Ibn Maʿdī's spear—

that brother of war from Zubayd.

And when moral purity is reckoned,

    you are ʿAmr ibn ʿUbayd.

How can a servant of God like you

    be called ʿUbayd—a 'little servant'?
