طالَ جُنحُ اللَيلِ أَو لَم يَطُلِ
None knows sorrow but the afflicted,
None knows sorrow save the afflicted,
whether night's darkness lengthens or not.
whether the wing of night grows long or short.

طائِرَ النَومِ شَديدَ الوَجَلِ
What ails this star, like me here on earth,
Why is this star like me upon the earth,
sleepless and filled with dread?
sleep having flown, and filled with dread?
أَتُراهُdo you suppose it يَتَّقيguards against طارِأَةًa sudden calamity

أَم بِهِ أَنّي غَريبُ المَنزِلِ
Do you suppose it fears some sudden calamity,
Does it fear some sudden calamity,
or is it troubled that I am a stranger here?
or does it sense that I am a stranger in this place?

Whenever I confront a grievous calamity,
Whenever I contemplate a grave misfortune,
Time brings me a grievous calamity.
Fate delivers to me yet another grave misfortune.
أَشتَكيI lament اللَيلَthe night وَلَوand even if وَدَّعتُهُI bade it farewell

بِتُّ مِن هَمّي بِلَيلٍ أَليَلِ
I lament the night; even if I bade it farewell,
I complain of the night, yet were I to bid it farewell,
I would pass, through sorrow, a still darker night.
my cares would plunge me into a night far darker still.

O daughters of the horizon, the lovelorn has no
comforter among people; is there one for me among you?
comforter among men; is there one among you for me?

May you never know calamities: they
May you never know calamities, for truly they
have grayed my head before I reached middle age.
have turned my hair grey before I have reached my prime.

شَدَّ ما بَينَ المُعَنّى وَالخَلي
The bright stars keep my sleepless vigil; yet
The shining stars have shared my vigil;
how vast the gulf between the tormented and the carefree!
vast is the distance between the sufferer and the carefree.

Would that I knew what has delighted them,
I wish I knew what so fascinates them,
for they never cease gazing from on high.
that they never cease gazing down from on high.

I do not envy them their immortality,
I do not envy them their immortality,
yet I do envy them their lack of understanding.
yet I envy them their lack of reason.

Whenever I revisit the dreams of youth,
Whenever I revisit the dreams of youth,
I say, 'Oh, would that youth had never passed!'
I say: "Would that youth had never passed away!"

O heart within my ribs,
O heart that beats within my ribs,
pleasure lies in ignorance alone—so be ignorant.
true pleasure lies in ignorance, so remain ignorant.

Delicacy is lovely in a sharp sword; so if
Refinement is beautiful in a sharp sword;
you love it, be like a sword blade.
if you desire such grace, then be like the blade.

In graceful, lovely women it is strength,
In fair maidens, tenderness is a strength,
but in a man's heart it is weakness.
but in the heart of a man, it is a weakness.

Let beauty not deceive the beautiful, for
Let not beauty deceive the beautiful, for
the nightingale's own song fells the nightingale.
the song of the nightingale often undoes the nightingale.

تُقتَلُ الشاةُ وَلا ذَنبَ لَها

The ewe is killed, though she has done no wrong;
The sheep is slaughtered though it has no sin;
but for her weakness, she would not be killed.
were it not for its weakness, it would not be slain.

If you are among beasts, be the lion of the earth;
If you must be among beasts, be a lion of the earth;
or among birds, be like the falcon;
if among birds, then be like the hawk.

or among people, be their strongest.
Or if you be among men, be the strongest of them;
Eminence is not the lot of those who rely on others.
glory is not the lot of the helpless.

What ails my people—may their rope not fray!—
What ails my people? Their cord is not yet frayed,
that they settle for a mere trickle from their times?
yet they content themselves with a mere trickle from life.

I am absorbed in concern for their affairs,
I am preoccupied with their plight,
while they are too occupied to mind their own affairs.
while they are distracted from their own affairs.

Whenever I think about our present,
Whenever I reflect upon our present state,
despair bars me—bars me—from the future.
despair bars me—bars me—from looking to the future.

وَمَعَ العِلمِ عَبيدُ الدُوَلِ
In ignorance we are slaves to desire,
In ignorance, we are slaves to passion;
and with learning, slaves to states.
and with knowledge, we become slaves to nations.

We love the sun, yet fear its heat;
We adore the sun yet fear its heat;
we have not ascended, and it has not yet come down.
we have not ascended, nor has the sun descended to us.

The West has walked upon Suha's crown,
The West has walked upon the crests of the stars,
while we have walked in the lowest depths.
while we have walked in the lowest abyss.

A group has branded us with shame:
Shame has been recorded against us by a people
those who have classed women among the neglected.
who have listed women among the neglected chattel.

She is either a commodity bearing
commodities, or a machine in a factory.
other commodities, or a machine within a factory.

They sent her out to sow the earth with footsteps
They sent her to sow the earth with her steps,
and vie with every proverbial verse.
vying in toil with every beast of burden.

The wastelands and hills pass her back and forth;
The wastelands and the hills pass her back and forth,
she is like a dinar between fingertips.
as a dinar is passed between fingertips.

She heeds not midsummer, though its heat scorches;
She heeds not the scorching heat of summer,
no, nor does she fear the north wind's cold.
nor does she dread the biting cold of the north wind.

At every door she has a station,
like Imru' al-Qays before the ruins.
standing like Imru' al-Qais before the weeping ruins.

She fears the words 'Be gone!' as she fears
She dreads the command "Begone!" as much as she fears
the words of one who says, 'You there, come in.'
the speaker saying, "O you, come inside."

She is like a sparrow arriving thirsty,
She is like a sparrow arriving parched with thirst,
that sees the hunter beside the watering place,
only to see the hunter waiting at the spring.

lying in wait; it turns aside, yet thirst draws it near,
The hunter lurks; thirst drives the bird near,
then fear of death drives it away.
then the dread of death drives it away again.

And how often she has circled it in hope,
How often she circled, full of hope,
and turned back, cutting the thread of hope.
then turned back, snapping the thread of hope.

And how often she has held out for charity a hand
How often has she stretched out a hand for charity,
that, in one like her, was made for kisses.
a hand created only to be kissed.

What ails her—may no evil befall her!
Why is she so bewildered by her plight?
She has no say in her plight, lost in confusion.

Ask her, or ask of her condition,
if you do not know—every frail child.
if you are ignorant of the state of every destitute child.

For the sake of money or those who crave it,
woman toils as camels toil.
the woman toils as camels toil.

Do you not see her, powerless,
Do you not see her, helpless and weak,

beneath a burden as crushing as a mountain?

Ropes have been fastened to her forearm—
Ropes are tightened around her forearm—
who has seen ropes around a stream?
who has ever seen ropes bind a flowing brook?

They burdened her with every arduous task,
They forced upon her every grueling task,
though she was made for nothing but the home.
though she was created only for the sanctity of the home.

So when she leaves the house in the forenoon,
If she leaves the house in the morning light,
she does not return until just before dusk.
she returns not until the sun begins to set.

She has grown used to what they accustomed her to,
She has grown used to their abuse,
as a gazelle grows used to the taste of bitter colocynth.
just as the gazelle accepts the taste of bitter gourd.

Daughter of Syria, in whom I mourn
O daughter of Syria, for whom I weep,
the lion's resolve and the lamb's soul,
possessing the lion’s resolve and the lamb’s spirit.

They have neglected you, though you have not neglected them,
They have wasted you, though you did not fail them,
and so have neglected every mother with cubs.
and in doing so, they have wasted every nurturing mother.
