Let whoever wishes rejoice.
Let whoever wishes to rejoice, rejoice
Let him rejoice who wishes to rejoice,
For I seek no rain from a rainless cloud.
As for me, I shall not dance to their tune
But I shall not seek rain from a deceptive cloud.

I have known time to be quick to hurt;
I know the times to be fraught with harm
I have known Time to be quick to harm,
So I have come closer to fearing it.
So I draw ever closer to fear of it
So I have grown closer to fearing it.

This new one's father is the old;
And this novelty, its father is antiquity
This New Year is but sired by the Old,
And a serpent does not give birth to a hare.
A snake does not give birth to a rabbit
And the viper does not give birth to a hare.

I see the universe looking at it mockingly
I see the universe eyeing it with a laugh,
Like one who saw a star while lost.
Like one who saw a guiding star in their wilderness
Like one who spots a guiding star in the wilderness.

And if humankind knew what it holds,
Had people known what it concealed
Yet if creation knew what it holds in store,
They would cry out to God for it to depart.
They would have turned to God before nightfall
They would cry out to God for it to vanish.

And if the Holiday knew what lies within them,
It would refuse to tear away its tent-cover.
It would have refused to tear off its festive garb
It would refuse to tear away its veil.

Beware: do not let their cheers deceive you,
Do not be fooled by their ululations
Do not let their acclamations deceive you,
Nor their saying to you, "Welcome!"
And their cries of "welcome" to you
Nor their cries of "Welcome!" greeting you.

They have dressed you up only to strip you bare
They have robed you only to cast you off,
As the foot takes off a sock.
As a foot strips off its sock
Just as the foot casts off a sock.

They are fond of treachery by nature;
Betrayal is innate to their nature
They are fond of treachery by nature;
So whoever has not betrayed has tried to.
So let whoever was not a traitor, beware
He who is not a traitor will soon attempt it.

And many a youth has stirred me with his words:
And though there be a stalwart whose words
How often has a youth stirred me with the words:
"I am your faithful, chosen companion."
Shook me: "I am your faithful, chosen friend"
"I am your loyal, chosen friend."

In his outward form, I keep company with a lion;
His form is that of a hyena
I accompany the likeness of a lion,
In his soul, he keeps company with a fox.
While his soul is that of a cunning fox
While he harbors the soul of a fox.

These are the people I accompany unwillingly,
That riffraff keep his company against their will
These are the people I am forced to keep company,
As the moon accompanies deep darkness.
As the moon keeps the clouds' company
Just as the moon must accompany the dark.

I find myself more solitary than a hermit,
Though I am numbered among the young locusts.
While I am among the beasts
Though I stand amidst a swarm of locusts.

And I frolic in a populous town,
And I revel in a prosperous land
I walk through a land teeming with life,
Yet think myself dwelling on a barren plain.
Thinking myself settled like the lark
Yet deem myself a dweller of the waste.

My friend claimed that bliss lies in palaces;
But how, when they are filled with wolves?
"How so, when it is teeming with serpents?"
But how so, when they are filled with wolves?

I have grown used to cares, so if I
I have grown accustomed to worries, else
I have grown so accustomed to sorrows that if
Could, I would refuse to rejoice.
I would have tried to avoid getting riled
I were able, I would refuse to be glad.

It is as if mountains rest upon my shoulders,
As though my joy were to be angry.
While my joy is in growing angry
As if my only joy lies in brooding.

How can a stranger find repose
Who keeps a scorpion of sorrow for company?
When his worries accompany him like a scorpion?
When he keeps company with the scorpion of his care?

I blame fate, if only I could
I would have reproached Fate, had I but known
Felt safe from my heart's reproach.
Protect my heart from blaming
My heart would be safe from reproaching me.

I met you with gray hair at my parting,
I found you with grey hair at my temples
You found me with gray hair upon my temples,
And youth, your brother, had bid me farewell.
While the days of your youth bid farewell
After youth, your brother, bade me farewell.

So my weeping is not for a year gone by,
So my tears now are no ordinary tears
My weeping is not for a year that has passed,
But for my youth, which has been taken away.
But for my lost youth they flow
But for my youth that has vanished from sight.

So, O you who rejoice at the coming of years,
Oh, the coming of the years brings joy!

The years come only to go.
The years come only to pass away
The years arrive only that they may depart.

Strange is my graying before its time;
Wondrous is my greying before my time
My premature graying is a wonder, yet
Stranger still would be not to see myself gray-haired.
More wondrous that I see no grey hair
It is more wonderful that I see anyone not gray.

Would turn a lad of ten feeble
Would turn a boy of ten into a hunched old man.

As though you saw something outrageous?
As if you have beheld a strange curiosity.

Whoever hates its radiance
So let him who hates its radiance do so;
I, for my part, hate to have it dyed.
I hate that he should dye his hair
As for me, I loathe that it be dyed.

O most ardent lover of the hills
And in you, I adore the daisies of the hills.

O Year, have you come to us in peace that we may hope,
That we may hope in you, or have you come bringing war?
That we should hope, or belligerent?
Or have you come waging war?

Your brother has turned his back and provoked it
Your brother departed having stirred up a storm
Its sons' humblest weapons were sword blades.
With the feeblest of weapons: gazelles
Where swords were the least of the weapons.

Therein, army strikes down army,
And cavalry troop grapples with cavalry troop.
And peak contends with peak
And battalion wrestles with battalion.

It sees lightning flashes from its clouds
They would see only clouds of dust and smoke.

Pounding the lofty peaks
Pounding the shoulders of towering peaks.

Its havoc brought dead land to life
It would have made the barren desert bloom.

Mankind waters it with a torrent of blood.

Is it not time, people, to be abashed?
Has the time not come, O people, to denounce them?

So cast aside your guns and sticks
So cast aside the revolver and the sword.

Do not follow among yourselves divergent paths
So do not follow the greedy among you.

From the sheer terror of its truth,
We begged the telegraph to be lying.
We hoped lightning would prove it lied
We begged the telegraph to be lying.

No cool water to quench our thirst
Nor find any sweetness in water.

My heart shattered along with her hull,
And I lay fearing it might heal.
I lie awake fearing it will heal
And I dreaded lest it ever be mended.

Plunging into a sea of tears.

I fear that you will flow out with the tears.

فَأُمسي عَلى كَبِدي راحَتي
أَخافُI fear مَعَwith الدَمعِthe tears أَنthat تُسرَباit be drained away
أَخافُ مَعَ الدَمعِ أَن تُسرَبا
So I spend the evening with my palm upon my liver,
I lay my head down but find no rest
So I pass the evening with my hand upon my heart,
I fear it may drain away with the tears.
Amidst tears, I fear I will collapse
I fear that it will flow out with the tears.
خُطوبٌcalamities يَراهاsees them الوَرىhumankind مِثلَهاtheir like
خُطوبٌ يَراها الوَرى مِثلَها
لِذَلِكَfor that reason أَشفَقَhe feared أَنthat تُكتَباthey be written down
لِذَلِكَ أَشفَقَ أَن تُكتَبا
Calamities whose like humankind witnesses;
Ordeals the world has seen its like
Calamities whose like the world has seen;
For that reason he feared they would be recorded.
Therefore I dread they be recorded
Thus it dreaded that they be written down.
لَقَدindeed نَكَبَafflicted الشَرقَthe East نَكَباتِهِhis calamities
لَقَد نَكَبَ الشَرقَ نَكَباتِهِ
وَحاوَلَand tried أَنto يَنكِبَafflict المَغرِباthe West
وَحاوَلَ أَن يَنكِبَ المَغرِبا
He has indeed afflicted the East with his calamities,
The East has endured its share of setbacks
It has afflicted the East with its disasters,
And tried to afflict the West,
And tried to trip the West
And attempted to afflict the West.
وَأَشقىand made miserable نُفوسُthe souls of بَنيthe sons of آدَمٍAdam
وَأَشقى نُفوسُ بَني آدَمٍ
لِيُرضيto please السَراحينthe wolves وَالأَعقُباand the eagles
لِيُرضي السَراحين وَالأَعقُبا
And made the souls of Adam's sons miserable
Most wretched are the souls of Adam's children
And he made miserable the souls of Adam's sons,
To please the wolves and the eagles.
To please generals and corporals
Only to satisfy the wolves and the eagles.
وَلَوand if جازَhe passed بَينَbetween الضُحىdaylight وَالدُجىand night
وَلَو جازَ بَينَ الضُحى وَالدُجى
لَقاتَلَwould have fought فيهِin it الضُحىdaylight الغَيهَباdeep darkness
لَقاتَلَ فيهِ الضُحى الغَيهَبا
And had he passed between daylight and night,
If it could come between dawn and dusk
If he were to pass between the dawn and the dusk,
Daylight would have fought deep darkness there.
Dawn would battle dusk
The light would do battle with the dark.
لَعَلَّكperhaps you تَمحوwill erase جِناياتِهِhis crimes
لَعَلَّك تَمحو جِناياتِهِ
فَنَنسىso we forget بِكَthrough you الذَنبَthe sin المُذنِباthe sinner
فَنَنسى بِكَ الذَنبَ المُذنِبا
Perhaps you will erase his crimes,
Perhaps you may erase its crimes
Perhaps you will erase his crimes,
So through you we forget the sin and the sinner.
And we'll forget, thanks to you, the sin
So that through you we forget the sin and the sinner.
إِذاif كُنتَyou are لاnot تَستَطيعُable to الخُلودَimmortality
إِذا كُنتَ لا تَستَطيعُ الخُلودَ
فَعِشthen live بَينَناamong us أَثَراًa legacy طَيِّباgood
فَعِش بَينَنا أَثَراً طَيِّبا
If you cannot endure forever,
If you cannot be eternal
If you cannot achieve immortality,
Then live on among us as a good legacy.
Then live on in us as a virtuous legacy
Then live among us as a pleasant memory.
فَإِنَّكَfor you فيin إِثرِهِhis wake راهِلٌdeparting
فَإِنَّكَ في إِثرِهِ راهِلٌ
مَشَيتَyou walk السَواكَthe languid gait أَوِor الهَيدَبىthe swift gait
مَشَيتَ السَواكَ أَوِ الهَيدَبى
For you will depart in his wake,
For in your footsteps, you leave
For you shall depart in his footsteps,
Whether you walk with a languid gait or a swift stride.
One who walks your path, be it of thorns or dunes
Whether you walk with a slow pace or a swift one.
