If, at the sight of you, I had something other than my heart,

It would not have added your affliction to its own.

Why do you tremble? Is there an earthquake in the air,

Or are you fleeing the face of a killer?

And how often you circle the house, bewildered!

Daughter of the hills, people's shelter is not yours.

They said, “A field butterfly, of no use.”

How poor people are in my eyes, and how rich you are!

    A seductress's mien, a poetess's ways,

With the austerity of worshippers and ascetics.

A kingdom's royal monogram, its borders embroidered

By the one who melted the sun into colors and embroidered you.

I saw the dreams of all the people of love

When you appeared before me at my window,

From those sleeping amid abasement and dust,

And from merchants, nobles, and kings.

And my heart recounted your complaint as a wondrous tale

Before my two ears heard your complaint.

Is not the lovers' bewilderment in you?

Then how can lovers fail to understand your whispered confidences?

I dreamed that the summer season was over.

Alas! The days have fulfilled your dream.

For dawn, trembling, announced its death to you,

And its death announcement is only part of yours.

For the flowers in the field are scattered limbs,

And among the birds, none flies but your two wings.

Day stretched toward it a pilferer's hand,

And night opened in it a slaughterer's eye.

Fate willed that it should suffer, so stripped it

Of jewels, and that you should suffer, so kept you alive.

Nothing of its merits remains but you,

Nor, of those who worship beauty, anyone but you.

People took their provision of solace from it and left,

And your eyelids did not take despair as provisions.

O garden flying in the garden's sky,

And bird like daisies, bearing an intense fragrance!

With summer passed a time when I was carefree,

    Upon a carpet of dreams.

You spent evenings asleep beside the watercourses,

And the flowers and grasses were your morning destination.

So whenever your ears heard an irrigation stream,

You urged your mounts toward the slope out of longing.

And whenever a lily bloomed on the slope,

You clapped with delight, and both your sides quivered.

You sipped nothing but fragrance, and never opened

Your eyes except upon beloved beauty.

And how often you kissed the roses' lips in rapture!

And how often you wiped the weeping narcissus's tears!

And how often you rocked in the cradle of light to

The rhythm of youth's melody, or its imitating echo!

And how often you ran, enticing children in the forenoon

To run in the field, their playground and yours!

They fed themselves hopes of capturing you,

So through their wishing they became your captives.

They ran to their utmost until, when they tired,

You stopped at your own limit, mocking them.

But for your wings, their quarry would not have escaped safely.

They both saved you, but where is your refuge?

    وَهَت قُواكِ كَما اِستَرخى جَناحاكِ

    Here you are, like the field, in death throes and a death rattle;

Your strength has waned as your two wings have slackened.

Through misery you have become a wanderer in your own dwelling,

As though it had not been your dwelling yesterday.

O butterfly of the field, its sadness is in my soul,

From what befell it and from what has overtaken you.

I loved it as a home where you played,

And my soul will love it as your resting place.

My heart has come to dwell in a troubled world

Since I turned toward the remnants of your world.

It finds no rest there except in dread,

Like birds amid snares and traps.

Couches that yesterday were occupied lie empty,

Lush with greenery; today no singer, no singer.

    بَلى هُناكَ ضَبابٌ فَوقَ أَشواكِ

    An empty land, and a sky without radiance;

Yes, there is fog above thorns.

So, O fierce winds of autumn, enough

Raging! Your slain upon the earth have grown so many.

What will your excuse be if God says tomorrow,

“Was the butterfly among your victims?”

O note that fades whenever it grows distant,

If you vanish from my hearing, your meaning does not vanish.

How great is God's power to bring you to life again,

With spring, just as he fashioned you before!

Then the field will return, resplendent in its delicate robes,

And you will return; I will visit it and meet you.
