I have not forgotten when she walked up to me, reproaching me,

When she saw me smiling, radiant.

She said, "Do you rejoice while death hovers

Over the earth, its every shot striking a vital spot?

Look: the homes are empty of young men,

And no home bereft of them has any beauty."

So I asked her, "Was it not for glory

And our happiness that they plunged into the fray?" She said, "Yes."

"O woman, if I weep at their absence,

Will they smile?" The beautiful woman answered, "No."

"Then cease your reproaches, for I am not ignorant

Of what you know; how could I be ignorant?

But I sent my thoughts along their trail,

At sea, in the skies, in the expanse of the wilderness.

Then I saw the light of glory above their banners,

And I saw them marching from victory to...

They barred the aggressor from every path:

So death awaits him, whether he retreats or advances.

So if today you smell the scent of blood,

And your eyes behold the traces of decay,

Take heart, for tomorrow, when the battle dust clears,

Our world will return, dearer and more beautiful."
