عَجَباًhow strange! لِمَنat one who أَمسىhas become وَكُلُّand all فَخارِهِhis pride
بِنُضارِهِin his gold المَخبوءِhidden فيin الصُندوقِthe chest
How strange is he whose entire pride now lies
How strange is he who spent the night
I marvel at the one whose entire pride lies
In his gold hidden in the chest!
With all his pride stored out of sight
In his gold, hidden away within a chest.
ماذاwhat يَقولُhe says إِذاwhen اللُصوصُthe thieves مَضواthey went away بِهِwith it
وَأَقامَand he remained بَعدَafter نُضارِهِhis gold المَسروقِstolen
What will he say when thieves make off with it,
What will he say when thieves make off
What will he say if thieves make off with it,
And he remains behind after his gold is stolen?
And left his secret pride aloft?
And he is left behind, surviving his stolen wealth?
إِنif يَرفَعِraises المالُwealth الكَريمَthe noble man فَإِنَّهُthen indeed it is
لِلنَذلِfor the base man مِثلُlike الحَبلِthe rope لِلمَشنوقِfor the hanged man
If wealth elevates the noble man, then it is
If wealth ennobles generous men
If money elevates the noble man, then truly,
To the base man what a rope is to the hanged.
It shames the mean ones time again
For the scoundrel, it is like the rope for the hanged.
لَمّاwhen صَديقيmy friend صارَbecame مِنamong أَهلِthe people of الغِنىwealth
أَيقَنتُI became certain أَنّيthat I قَدalready أَضَعتُI had lost صَديقيmy friend
When my friend became one of the wealthy,
When my friend joined the rich elite
When my friend became one of the people of riches,
I knew for certain that I had lost my friend.
I knew my friend was now complete
I realized with certainty that I had lost my friend.
